St. Nick's stuff in shoes

I have never heard of this until today.  I thought you got stuff from St. Nick in your stocking.  Why would people put brand new gifts and candy in gross old shoes???

Re: St. Nick's stuff in shoes

  • In Six to Eight Black Men, David Sedaris says the Dutch kids leave out their clogs for Santa. And also, Santa's six to eight black men pretend to kick you if you're bad.

  • That's definitely a weirdo Dutch tradition.  Santa doesn't put stuff in my shoes because the Elfstergate chihuahua usually beats him to it.

  • They also have a tradition of white people dressing up as a black elf. Are we going to start that, too??

  • Lots of the Catholics around here do that. My freshman year of college all the girls on my floor put their shoes out in the hallway and I was so confused.

  • We did this in elemetary school and even at the age of 8, I thought it was weird and didn't want shoe candy.

  • i remember learning about that crazy business when i was a kid. i was dubious even then. but still it persists (among the Dutch)!

  • I'm from Holland!  Isn't zat veeeird?
  • I've heard of it before but didn't think anyone actually really did that. But it ranks slightly below the groom drinking from the bride's shoe tradition that my mom observed at someone's wedding on the Disgust-o-meter.

I'm pretty sure it's pronounced your mom's a moron and if you didn't have your name legally changed by the age of 22, so are you. Unless you're from another continent. -Groomz
  • We did this when I grew up. It is one of my favorite traditions. We had a pair of wooden dutch shoes my parents got on a trip to the Nederlands that we kept under the fireplace and every day of December there was a little piece of candy in each for my brother and I.

We actually plan on buying a pair of wooden shoes for Dagger when we go in April to continue the tradition.
