Fringe Blankets

Anyone ever made one?  Any tips or advice?  I've watched a couple of youtube vids and it seems easy enough, but if I'm giving as gifts, they need to be near perfect :p

Re: Fringe Blankets

  • Invest in REALLY sharp scissors!  The fleece is hard to cut!

  • I make these a LOT. Every baby shower I get invited to gets a 1 yard (double sided) tied blanket. They are always a really big hit and I have a few 2.5yd ones around my house as throws and they are the warmest things ever. A couple years ago I made one for my grandparents and my aunt and uncle. like I said, I make them a lot.

First, trim off the wierd edge that is on the non cut sides (usually the long sides) of the fleece...I use the scraps and braid them together for a dog tug toy.

Then, I lay the whole thing on the floor (after vaccuming up all the possible stray dog hair, both peices, one on top of the other and line up all the edges. This is the crappy part, especially if it is a large one. I sit on the floor and cut the strips along all the edges, about two fingers width between cuts and about 1 inch into the blanket, cut through BOTH pieces.

Finally, I go around the whole thing knotting the two pieces together. I usually have a print on one side and a solid on the other, so I switch the knot so the solid and print alternate colors ... Hope that makes sense and helps. I never wrap them, just fold them up and put a big thick ribbon around it.

Good luck and PIP when you finish! :)

Ooh, good idea, thanks!  And thanks for the tips, I don't know if I'll get motivated to make one, but I'd really like to :)

  • It really isn't hard. I know my directions sort of make it seem so. Also, if you watch your local fabric store ads (they come in the Sunday paper with coupons usually) Like JoAnns, Make sure that you buy the fleece on sale. less than $5 a yard is usually a really good price.

I don't remember if I started making the tug toys with the scraps before I found etsy or not, but they sell them there too... they are expensive, but my dogs love them, and I make them with scraps, so they are usually "free"...

  • I made one for my husband when we first started dating...he LOVES it.

I second the sharp scissors, and be patient when trying to lay the two pieces together.

Oh lord, patience is a virtue I do not possess...But I definitely wanted to do print and solid.

I was literally looking at these yesterday afternoon online.  I'm thinking about making one.

When you say knot the sides together - is it just a normal tie that you do or something special?  Dumb question, sorry.  How do you alternate them so each side is shown?

If its your first time making you might also want to pin the pieces together with stick pins, just 3-4 per side depending on how big of a blanket.  It keeps the fabric from pulling.  I usually make my strips about 6 inches long so they are easier to tie.  It does give a longer fringe so it just depends on the look you want.

  • As far as the knooting goes, I just tie a normal, one, but alternate which color is on top of the knot, like if you are using blue and red, tie one with the red on the top of the knot, then for the next, put the blue on top. It is really hard to explain in words without actually showing someone. I guess my strips are about the length of the scissors, but one edge of the fabric has more stretch too, so I cut those a little shorter. I guess they are more like 2 or 3 inches long usually, not one. On the baby ones, I make the strips as short as I can while still being able to knot it so baby doesn't have long strips to possibly chew on or whatever.
