Plasma vs. LCD

Which is better these days?  All of my research is pointing to plasma, but maybe there is something I'm missing.  We're looking to replace a current plasma (which we love) with something bigger- 55"+.  Which brands are the best?

Re: Plasma vs. LCD

  •  We initially purchased a Sony LCD which was good, but ended up with a bad clouding issue around the outside edges of the screen. The owner of the local store we bought it from actually came over to our house and confirmed (it's a rare issue I guess). They credited us the purchase price and we went with a plasma.

We love it. To me the colors and blacks seem much sharper. Dh is a huge movie buff and he's much happier with the plasma. We've had it for a couple of years, but it's a Panasonic. Based on the size of our room we went with a 50inch screen. I don't think you could go wrong with either, it just depends what your needs are.

  • Having just watched my moms 42 in plasma last night and our brand new 47 in LCD right now I'd say the are identical. Price wise our 47in was a couple hundred cheaper than their 42in (both the same brand) not to mention ours has more features is lighter, uses less power and doesn't heat up the room (plasmas give off a lot of heat).

  • We bought a plasma 4 years ago when they were still super spendy. We really liked the quality better then as compared to the LCD. But it's incredibly heavy and trying to move that sucker requires at least three people (or two strong guys).
  • I would go with a plasma over LCD. The colors are much truer and the blacks are sharp. LCD just didn't do it for me when they came out. Now, I'd almost say go LED rather than so far back in the technology. Personal preference, though.

  • We went with plasma because we got an awesome deal on it and haven't looked back.  IMO LCD's aren't all they're cracked up to be and the real quality ones 1080p and 120hz are still way too expensive considering the LED technology is out there now.  We stood next to an LCD and a Plasma and really liked the color better on the plasma.  It's energy star rated and doesn't seem to get warm like PP's mentioned.  All around a better buy.
