Recycling Poll

Inspired by a crappy person who works in my building... He threw out a Coke can into the trash.  The trashcan that was like maybe 3 feet away from the big blue recycling bin.  It made me stabby... SOOOOOO....

Re: Recycling Poll

  • I'm picking "yes, but only certain items".

I guess I could have also picked "cupcake".  At work, I recycle paper, cans, and print cartridges.  At home, we don't have regular recycling service since we live out in the county and not the city, so we save our cans and turn them in at a recycling center.  We've thought about doing that with cardboard too.

  • I am one of the nerds who recycles everything. However, its an extra $60/yr for WM to pick up recycling from us so we have our own bins in the garage for plastic, paper & glass and bring them to our local elementary school to drop off at their recycling bins.

I really try to make an effort to have a little of a "footprint" as possible. I recycle/reuse things if I can, or buy older furniture and spend the time sanding, restaining and whatnot. I also shop predominately at my local farmers market and only go to the grocery store for things I can't get there. I also make my own cleaning solutions with the exception of laundry soap (haven't tried that yet).

This. They're really big into recycling at work. We have NO recycling service in the town where I live. We've discussed getting into it at home and finding the nearest recycling plant, but we haven't done it just yet.

  • If I throw away something recyclable I feel bad.

  • I chose yes, but only certain things.

At home we recycle plastic bottles, food cans and aluminum drink cans. At work we recycle drink cans, paper, and ink cartridges if you're motivated enough to do it yourself.

  • I answered yes all the time, because if we dont recycle at home, we get fined.  The garbage company provides a garbage and a recycling bin for us.

This. Our company fines us too. However they did not provide us recycling bin or garbage can.

  • At our house, we have a big recycling bin on wheels that looks just like our big trash bin.  I seriously hardly ever recycled until I moved to this house because my parents live in the country. But now, we fill up that big recycling bin so fast! I feel really proud every time we fill it up.  DH drinks canned Pepsi a lot and pretty much any kind of food container can be recycled, so we do our part.  At work, I recycle paper because we have bins that are only for paper.

  • I answered snowflake because, even though it's embarrassing, I'm still not entirely sure what's recyclable and what's not. My town growing up didn't recycle, and so we never did. Even my school didn't recycle, so even though we talked about it in science class, we never actually did it.

Now that we live in Philly we recycle- but I'm constantly putting things in the bin that don't go, and throwing out things that can be recycled- Greg's constantly on me about it. It always ends up being mostly beer bottles and soda cans.

I use reusable grocery bags though... that counts for something, right?

  • I would say I recycle 95% of the time. Sometimes I'm lazy and just throw out the whole take out plastic container w/ the food inside instead of washing it. I have to remind DH of things he can recycle sometimes.

I went to Bed Bath and Beyond to get some Hanukkah candles the other day and the cashier was taking a bag off of the bagger thingy and I told her I didn't need one. She then throws it out!! I really wanted to say something but I held my tongue. I should've said something. So wasteful!

  • I really wanted to pick cupcake cause it made me laugh! We have recycling here in vegas but I have to complain. In monterey where I used to live we could recycle up to 7 in that little triangle on the bottom of bottles n stuff here they only do up to 3!!! Geesh stupid vegas!!!
  • I said Yes, But only certain times.  We just got recycling in our neighborhood a little less than a year ago.  The great thing is that we don't have to seperate anything! (we just have a big bin like our trash bin - like Ash mentioned).  They pick it up every other week.  We do forget time from time and throw things away by accident.

The building I work in only has paper recycling bins and we don't have them in the kitchen (except in the office).  But in the kitchen we have an organic waste recycling system.  We fill up giant bins with left over food and whatnot (it gets pretty gross by the end of the day) and the city comes to pick them up and composts it.

  • Recycling is HUGE here. It gets taught as part of the school curriculum and everything. As a result, I recycle everything and get kind of panicky if I'm unable to (like when I was in Italy and there were no recycling receptacles). We also compost. Barely anything goes in the garbage, so we only throw out one teeny bag on garbage day every two weeks.

  • We don't... I grew up in the middle of nowhere, and we tried recycling for a while, but we had to haul our stuff 45 minutes to a recycling center that was open 5 hours a week, no joke. That didn't last long.

They don't seem to have a recycling system here, or, if they do, they sure don't make it easy to find out about.

Work no longer recycles, even though the university is supposedly so concerned about waste that the administration have all put "please consider the impact on the environment before printing this email" in their email siggys. Huh?

I used to save aluminum and take them to scrap places, but I haven't done that in a while because it was such a pain to find somewhere that would take small loads.

  • I recycle everything.  I will bring stuff home with my from work or restaurants to recycle it and I get really mad when I see people throw things away that can be recycled.
