Kindle????

My 12y/o niece wants one for Christmas. Should my dad get the regular one or the 3G one? I have no idea what the difference is or if it is worth the extra $50. Thanks!!!

Re: Kindle????

  • The difference is that with the 3G one, you have Internet access anytime with either 3G or WiFi. With the WiFi only one, you can only access the Internet when a wireless network is available.

I have the 3G Kindle b/c I bought it before they came out with the WiFi only one, but I think the WiFi only one is perfectly fine. I rarely use the 3G anyways to buy books on the Kindle or use the Internet, I find it's easier to just buy books on my computer and then Amazon automatically sends them to my Kindle. If it had been available when I bought mine, I would have gone with the WiFi only Kindle.

  • I'm getting one for Christmas! YAY! (well hopefully lol)

I'm going with the WiFi only. I don't really see a point to the 3g unless you travel a lot, or don't have regular access to Wifi.

Basically with Wifi only she'd only be able to download books when she had access to wifi. With 3g should could do it anywhere she had service.

Save the $50 on the Kindle and get her a $50 GC for books to go with it, or a case even!

  • I have the 3G one because it's a second generation and they didn't have the WiFi only version then.  I will say, that I do use the 3G quite often, but mostly because we travel quite a bit.  Or we did until recently at least.  If I didn't have the 3G I could easily buy books in advance if I knew I wasn't going to have WiFi access.  I don't think she would need the 3G and agree the money would be better spent on a gift card or something so she can start off her book collection.

  • Thanks!! I will order the WIFI one. I just wanted to make sure there was not a big difference.
  • I didn't want one but after looking at all of the books sitting in front of me right now...I may ask for one for christmas! :)
