Tell me what would you have said! (kind of long)

Had an interesting conversation about church.

The conversation was with this woman I just met at the place where I worked. I was watching the phones for the regular Admin and she had to be there, for some other reason.

Her: Do you go to church?

Me: Not in a while, I haven't found one I really wanted to go to, so we are shopping around.

Her: Well you should come to "her church" because we have an excellent pastor and the music is wonderful and your teenagers would love it.

Me: Humph that might not be a bad idea, we have been going through a lot this year and I kind of want to get back into the swing of things so I can feel some peace even when stuff is going on.

Her: Well maybe the reason you're going through this stuff is because you are not in church serving the lord and he wants you to know he's in charge.

Me: Um, I don't think God does bad things just to get you in church. I think things happen according to the decisions you make.

Her: No, I thinks he's trying to tell you, you are going to h*ll.

I just stopped and looked at her and ended the conversation. We sat there for almost 30 minutes in silence. I was thinking to myself there is no way I want to visit a church that has people like her in it. I just had to share this interesting story with you guys. I just didn't know what to say other than "okay, thanks for the info" and starting doing something else. what would you guys have told her?

  • Sounds like my crazy nail salon lady.
    Lilypie First Birthday tickers
  • Yikes. I probably would have told her that people spewing hatred and judging other people go to heII... and remind her that the only one allowed to judge is God. Not her.

    Yeeeeeah... avoid that church.

  • I am not a church-goer, but even if I were I would have told her that I would never go to a church whose members would tell me I was going to hell.  And I agree with BoyMom - sounds like her crazy nail lady!  Maybe Christmas helps bring the "special" religious people out of the woodwork?
  •  "What is it with all these d@mn lunatics lately?"

  • I would have been honest, "Do you think you will win me over by being an overly-judgmental nuisance? If these are the tactics you employ for your church... I gotta tell you, they suck."

  • I get asked the 'do you go to church' question a lot.  Oklahoma is full of crazies.  The best response from the get go is "Nope, I don't go to church and you know what? I do.not.ever.plan.to.EVER."

For some reason, that really shuts people up. Now the real crazies may continue on but I usually top my rant off with "if looks could kill" eyes.

  • No one ever brings it up with me. Not even my students. It's like people just know that I'm a lost cause Wink

However, just like the crazy nail tech, I would have just walked away. I don't argue with crazy outside of work.
