So Anju got another Buprenix shot

It is a painkiller similar to morphine although supposedly stronger and lasts longer. When I told the vet I could give sub-q injections and suggested she send a bottle home with me in case he needed a shot tomorrow she said no. Can you believe that?

Re: So Anju got another Buprenix shot

  • I hope Anju doesn't become addicted to painkillers like all the celebrities do.  Your vet is mean!

  • You obviously look like a junkie or a dealer.  I don't get vet's sometimes, it saves them the time and the stress if you know what you are doing (which you do).

    How is Anju doing?

  • He's doing a little better. I am supposed to keep him from running and jumping and walking up and down any stairs for 14 days. That should be easy. Confused

  • 14 days?!  that is like a year for a dog.  Poor puppy.
  • Certain meds the vet has to account for every dose personally, so that may be why they wouldn't let you take home a little bup. Its a little silly but its probably not that she doesn't think you know what you're doing. Hope your pup feels better soon, keeping them still is never easy :(
  • I feel sort of bad, my humor clearly didn't come through here. I was totally posting this as a drug seeking behaviour joke.

On a serious note, I wish more vets were open to people that know how to give injections. My dog has hurt his neck, so giving him oral pills (which he doesn't like) has the potential to cause him pain and more injury as he struggles against it. And he's getting 5 pills a day. I really wish I could just give him a couple shots a day.

  •  Sorrrry. I am unfunny tonight. Vets are tough- its hard to find good ones that are open to working with people on different treatments/options. I've found they tend to be threatened by people who know what they're doing, maybe because you knowing how to give an injection would cut in on the office charge if you had  to come in?

Have you thought about looking into a holistic vet?

  • I generally love my vet and for basic pet items & even illness that is not emergency I only see him. He knows I am not stupid, talks with me about making good decisions and explains all the risks in the treatment and diagnostic options I am choosing.

But he is so awesome that he's always booked now (he was so easy to get into 7 years ago when he was a baby vet) so when in a situation like this I have to see one of his employees. I have seen this gal (also a baby vet) the past couple of years for all the emergency times and she's getting better. A couple years from now she'll probably be great and booked all the time too. The time she wanted me to do a $600 test for a bad ear infection I thought I was going to shed her blood.

And there is little I hate more than the overnight emergency vet. He didn't even really do a physical exam on my dog until I informed him I wasn't spending $350 for an x-ray.
