The factory-installed alarm on my car (2005 Chevy aveo) has been acting up lately. It goes off at random times for no reason at all. Some days, it won't do it; others (like today) it'll go off several times in an hour.
I've looked up everything I can think of online to see if I can figure out what's wrong with it myself or at least disable it. Can't do it. I took it to Castrucci in Milford and they sucked. I had an appointment, and the woman at the desk told me that they were waaay behind schedule due to someone calling off (giving me the impression that they didn't want my business) and then she told me (a) it would be $95 just for them to look at it and they may or may not figure out what was wrong, and (b) they needed the alarm to go off while the car was there in order to fix it. Umm, why?? It only goes off for 30 seconds anyway, so what, is everyone going to run to my car and figure it out in that time? They couldn't check for loose fuses/switches/sensors/whatever???
So after being told I definitely had to pay $95 and they weren't likely to actually FIX it, I left!
Does anyone know of a person/place who can maybe take care of this problem without charging me unreasonable amounts of money? I have no idea who is trustworthy around here, and I'm sure my neighbors are starting to hate my car. TIA!
Re: Who can I trust to fix my car alarm?
H had this same issue happen w/ his old Saab. We found out that the reason it was doing it was b/c the battery for the actual car alarm was dying. That's what its designed to do; go off at random times and even starting the car or pushing the disarm button didn't work every time to stop it. We took his to a Saab dealership and they told us we had two options: (1) replace the battery (which for his car used to cost a fortune to do anything b/c it was foreign) or (2) disable the alarm part, but leave the door locking mechanism on. We opted for option #2 b/c he didn't really use the alarm part.
As far as where to take it, I would suggest Pep Boys first; we've always had really good service w/ them. We started taking H's car there about a year ago and they are very reasonably priced and do a good job. Or a Chevy dealer (but I would not suggest McCluskey b/c I've always had the same you're a pain in the butt to us kind of service like you had at the other place). HTH!
