One of the worst nights of my life.

I woke up at 130 this morning to my DH making a really scary gurgling sound. I thought he was getting sick so I went to get a can or something for him, and when I came back in the room he was on his back unresponsive, barely making sounds...not answering when I called out his name. I called 911 and the rescue squad came, by the time the police came his eyes were focusing and he was really slow in his speech but he was somewhat responsive. They checked his blood sugar and it was 52. Gave him glucose and put an IV in. He started to come around but was really groggy, and somehow he consented to not be taken to the ER.

When after a sandwich he was still not getting any clearer and focused (he couldnt tell us what day it was) I decided to take him in to the ER myself.  They couldnt get his sugar to regulate properly so they gave him some meds for nausea for a huge headache (common with bad lows of this nature) got him to eat and keep food down and stabilized his sugars and sent him home. I am waiting for Monk to wake up so I can take him to my moms for a while so I can get some sleep.

He doesn't remember anything that happened after 9 pm last night, he is super tired from his meds and will probably feel like he has the worst hangover of his life once he sleeps this off....but y'all I was terrified! I was beside myself. Thank goodness I woke up.

  • How scarey, I can't imagine going through that.  For you or him.  Do they know what caused it?  Does he have to do any follow up?

  • That is so scary!  I'm so glad you woke up and that he is doing ok now.  Is he diabetic?
  • He is a type 1 diabetic, and I have never ever seen him like this ever. Right now we are awake but he is trying to eat to bring his sugar up again...he was 139 when we left the hospital at 7 AM and we just woke up and he checked his sugar and he was 66. We are putting a call into the endocrinologist because he is just not able to keep himself regulated.

It seriously was the most horrifying thing I have ever experienced. I dont remember if I said this in the OP but he also must have bit his tongue during all this because the whole front of his tongue is bruised and has teeth marks...he nearly bit through his tongue.

He told me that something like this has not happend to him for maybe 20 years and this was by far the worst.

Thank you guys for your thoughts and prayers and I will definitely keep you updated. After all this I just really needed to get the thoughts out of my head for a bit so I could calm down enough to get some sleep.

  • How scary! I know you were saying a few weeks ago he was having trouble with his sugars, hopefully is endo can help get things worked out for him, maybe an insulin pump would be an option for him?
  • I would freak out too! Is he diabetic?
  • Omg, I'm so sorry you are dealing with all of this but also SO glad that you woke up and were able to take care of your honey!!! Did they suggest an insulin pump or anything?? I hope it gets taken care of quickly! Let me know if you need anything. I have school tomorrow during the day but let me know if you need a babysitter for the early evening or anything.
  • How scary! T&P with you guys!

  • Omgoodness Shannon!! That is so scary! I hope he improved throughout the day.
  • He did continue to improve during the day the sugars stabilized and he mentioned he was feeling much better. I think I have an upper respiratory infection...or else I have a really bad cold and sore throat, but that has taken a lot out of me and on top of very little sleep and the anxiety I have had all day I am just about beat. Thanks to you all for listening and offering help I so appreciate it!
