WWCND

Sorry - this is a little long:

Since the summer I've been planning to have a surprise party for my H's 30th in late January. We live in a tiny condo, so my mom said she would have no problem letting me host there.

I don't know what the eff I was thinking...but for some reason neglected to consider that it would be completely odd to have a surprise 30th birthday for H and invite his twin brother as a guest. Um...yea....his birthday too. I contacted his girlfriend to see if she would be interested in doing a joint party at my mom's. She is. All seems well. Until we combine our guest list and realize we have 100 people. Whoa. My mom's can probably fit about 75-80 people...but that is a tight fit.

My H and I both have huge families, and family friends that we are very close to. Basically, can't cut my list down and can't ask her to cut hers either.

I'm a little frustrated because I was really excited to do this for him, and know I could pull off a cocktail party nicely at my mom's - but now I'm just feeling overwhelmed or like it would be crazy to jam all those people in.

What would you do? Have the party at mom's - invite 100, hope only about 80 can attend and make it work,
or
find a venue to host the party, pony up the cash to pay for it and know that things would likely be more comfortable that way but forfeit everything you had envisioned this party to be.

Re: WWCND

  • Can you not just have a nice cocktail party at another venue? So exactly what you want only different location?

  • Honestly, I'd invite them all to a party at your mom's.  Some people won't show.  Even if more than 80 do, you'll just be a little cramped, but surrounded by people the guests of honor love.
  • I would trim about 10 people off the list and still have it at your moms.  I'm throwing a 40th for my sister and I had a hellofa time finding a venue that didn't want to charge me an arm and a leg.

I can do that, and have just started looking in to different venues to host at. The problem is I think it would be more expensive to host at another venue...and I just have a hang up about it. It's my own weird thing. Growing up we always had awesome parties at my mom's...and I think the only time I was ever at another venue for a big occasion in my family was for my grandparents 50th Anniversary. So, I guess it is just because I'm so accustomed to the personalized family parties I experienced through my life.

  • Is BIL's GF going to help with the cost?
  • Yes. If we had party at a venue, we would split the cost in half. But, all the venues around us are either pretty pricey or pretty cruddy.

If we had party at my mom's we would probably get a keg or a bunch of cases, stock up on bottles of liquor that are most popular amongst the crowd and get a bunch of wine and split the cost of that. For the appetizers, I could make 3-4, she could make 3-4, I know my mom, best friend, and grandmother, MIL and SIL would all probably offer to make something...so that would be a help.

  • For a cocktail party of 100, I'd just invite people to drop by over the course of a few hours. So hopefully, some people would come early and leave and others would come later and the crowd would spread out.

  • I've heard Maggianos has a good reception room. The wood paneling is pretty dark though, so you might have trouble getting your dress to match the decor.
