Tipping

So I was reading an article on yahoo about end of year tipping (http://tinyurl.com/36fjpye). I've always heard of people tipping the garbage man and the postal worker. How in the world do they do that? I NEVER see my garbage men or my mail person....

Do y'all do special tipping/gifts at the holidays?

Re: Tipping

  • i tip. for the garbage man i get up early when i hear him and i run out there. for the mailman, i put a really bright colored envelope taped to the mailbox with his name on it.  our mailboxes are at our door so it's not like someone would drive by and grab it.  maybe look for him/her on a saturday?

i also tip my massage guy (i work with him so i just give him a little more than usual tip $) and my lawn cleanup guy.

i tip those people because they do things for us all year long.  mailmen are typically not supposed to take $ because they work for the government but who cares, our mailman rocks and he deserves it.  i know a lot of people that give out dunkin donuts giftcards and things like that.

  • Hmm, I'm usually gone when the garbage people come, however, I am off the last week of the month so maybe I'll try to do that that week. They were really nice to us after C was born, they came up to where we keep the trashcan and picked it up from there instead of the curb b/c they knew we just had a baby and might have forgotten to bring it down to the curb (which we had forgotten - frequently).

My mail person is another story, we are in townhouses and the mailbox is one of those stands at the entrance with everyone in the neighborhood and you have a tiny box. So I probably won't be able to do anything for that person. But the FedEx and UPS guy, maybe I need to do something for them, they've always been good to us and man have they had a workout coming to my house! I love online shopping!

  • We were somewhat lame the last two years but we will be tipping our mailperson (who left us a really nice card) and the garbag men too, they usually are picking up right after we leave for work so I figure one Monday I will just stay home a bit longer. For the mail carrier we will just leave it in the box with her name on it.
  • Our lawn guy is our neighbor. He gets discounted rent for doing the lawn. He has yet to rake up the leaves. He's not getting a tip! If anything, I'm going to tip off the landlord and let him know that our walkways are obstructed by leaves.

I plan to bring in GCs and treats for Jacob's daycare teachers, but otherwise we don't have plans to tip anyone else.

I'm laughing my head off at the bolded part for some reason. Like, still laughing.

Um, how do y'all know your mail person's name?!

  • Our mailman leaves up postcards once or twice a year with his name and cell phone number in case we need to get a hold of him.

I never think to tip the mailman or the garbage men.  Not sure if DH does.  We have 3 garbage men that pick up weekly - recycling, trash, yard waste.  The trash and yard waste are in tipper barrels so all they need to do it wheel the cans to the side of the truck, push a button, and wheel the cans back.

  • I might be in the minority on this and I'll probably get flamed for this, but we never tip any of those service providers. They make a ton of money doing what they do and unlike servers, they don't depend on tips to survive.

It might also be a regional thing, but I don't know of anyone who tips those providers here. I know I sound like a Scrooge, it's just something that's not done here!

  • No flames here. I had heard of people doing it but have never done it and then I saw this article and sort of felt like I should. I don't know anyone IRL that does either.

  • We don't tip the mailman or paper delivery person.  If I got good service I would, but the mailman frequently leaves our box open and the newspaper person likes to drive through our grass.

We do need to do something for the UPS guy, he brings Sadie biscuits sometimes.

  • I would think about tipping my mail person, but it changes. I would never tip our garbage people, some people in our neighborhood do, and I wonder why, because our trash men are horrible! They drop stuff, don't pick it up, leave half your trash. I've complained numerous times about them, as have other neighbors and nothing gets done.

no flames! but i get paid to do my job and i get a ton of gifts from the patients that come into the office. it's sort of the equivalent of tipping.  they get me gifts because i take care of them all year long just as i give a gift because certain people take care of me all year long.  it's not required, just a nice gesture of appreciation.

i wouldn't think anything of it if someone DIDN'T tip. it's just something that i do.  one year at the old house our mailman was an as$ so he didn't get a tip!
