f/u and an apology

First off I want to apologize for my post yesterday re: my dad's cat. I know it was pretty random, but I was just in shock. I didn't mean to bring another Debbie Downer moment to the board, especially during this time of year.

As a f/u: I went to San Jose last night and spend a little time with my parents. They opted to have the autopsy and it turned out that Jack had an enlarged heart, so he more than likely died of a heart attack. I was glad my parents decided to go ahead with the autopsy because my Dad needed to know there was nothing he could've done. The vet said it was only a matter of time. And I was mistaken. Jack wasn't almost three years old...he was almost 2 years old. The vet was very caring with my parents and I'm glad my Dad has some peace of mind.

Re: f/u and an apology

  • I'm so sorry L, and don't feel like you have to be sorry about posting that.

The exact same thing happened to my kitty Pinot Noir a few years ago and it was really traumatic. I was home with him and he was fine one second purring on my lap, the next second he was having a seizure and then he was gone. We thought about doing an autopsy but decided against it since it wouldn't change the fact that he was gone, but I always suspected it was a heart attack. I have a feeling lots of animals have congenital heart defects that go undetected, and that Pinot was one of them.

It's so, so hard to lose a pet. I hope you and your dad can find peace in the fact that nothing you could have done would have changed the outcome. And that your dad provided Jack with a loving home during his lifetime. I'm sure Jack is purring down to you guys from kitty heaven about that.

  • Don't apologize, this board has always been here to support other Nesties whenever they need it.

I'm glad your dad got some closure and it was sweet of you to come up with that plan to get some answers.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I went back and found your other post. Nothing to apologize for, it's hard to see parents fall apart. And your dad's had a rough time lately so I'm sure this was esp hard for him. I'm sorry about his loss. My grandparents had a dog who had a seizure and died. She was much older so they had a long time with her but they had a really hard time with her death.
  • :( I didn't read your post until now. I'm so sorry that your dad (and you!) went through that. I just wanted to say that my heart goes out to you and I'm sending you dust and hugs that this is the last of the crap you have to go through. I hereby order this month to start being awesome.

  • i just read your post, i've just been in and out lately.  that is so incredibly sad!  i am so sorry for your dad and poor little jack.  i'm glad you were able to go be with your parents and find a way for them to know what happened.  heck, we're having to segregate one of the kittens from the rest of the cats for a few days because of a litter box issue and i feel terrible about that, never mind actually losing a pet.  i know your dad is going to miss jack terribly... i hope he's able to eventually remember the good times and take comfort in the fact that jack had a wonderful home with people who loved him.
