I feel like an insensitive jerk
This past weekend one of our field employees had a heart attack and aneurism, he passed away while they were prepping him for surgery. I didn't know him that well, but I was sorry to hear of his passing.
Well one of his sons just called and said that he had some questions for us. I didn't even think to give my condolences, I just patched him through to our manager
. I didn't even realize it until after I'd transferred the call.

Katy you are one of the least insensitive people I know. Geesh dear I give you a pass as well. You were in work mode and did exactly what you were supposed to do! If you have a family address send a card that way they know that people at his work cared. They don't know you you said yourself you didn't really know him.
Sorry about your coworker passing. Hugs shrug this one off!!!

Im sure the son did not even notice that you could have said your condolences to him. Im sure he was more concentrated on speaking to your manager.
Oh here's another one for ya. My co-workers 16 year old son died a few months ago. A couple weeks ago when he was leaving for the day he told me he would be gone the next morning, but he might come in in the afternoon. And I said "ooooh lucky you!" His response?
"Oh not really, it's my son's birthday tomorrow so the school is having a big memorial assembly for him. My wife's gonna be a mess."
OUCH!!!!!
Ooo you definitely get a pass! How were you supposed to know he wasn't just taking a morning off?
