OMG - my water bill :(

Our water bill comes every 3 months and it surprises me every time because I forget about it.  Well - I opened it today and it was twice the normal amount!  DH's first question: "did you forget to pay it again?"  (oops) - but this time, the answer is NO - I did pay it, in September.  I looked back in my check book, the check went through, it cleared because I even looked at my online statement and our new bill doesn't say anything about a past due amount.

So, I'll be calling tomorrow.  But...I have a feeling that it's reflecting on our leaky toilet that we have since replaced.  Our old toilet ran all of the time unless we remembered to push the handle back up completely.  This happened once before, and the bill was about 1.5 times the normal amount, so this would make sense...but seriously, I was NOT planning on this bill this month - especially since DH just lost his holiday pay for missing work on Monday with a migraine :(

Here's hoping that job offer comes sooner than later...and thank goodness for some extra student loan money sitting in the bank.

Re: OMG - my water bill :(

  • Ours was ridiculous too!!!!  My husband called and questioned it.  He went out and read the meter reading and told it to them over the phone.  They adjusted our bill by almost $200.  Turns out they sometimes do an estimate instead.
  • that sucks. I am sure you can call and tell them you had a leaky toilet and have since fixed it. That happened at one of the apartments for the CI. They had a leaky outside tap...they looked back thru the previous bills and did give us a credit.
  • That totally sucks! :(    Those bills have gone up enough already lately, and a leak makes it so much worse!!

It's going to suck if those big rate increases go through...  can you imagine how much worse it would be if those were in effect?!?  Gah!!

They probably won't give a credit for a leaky toilet though.  Unlike a leaky outside tap, you really did "use" that water, so they'll probably stand their ground.   The DPU is a total PITA to deal with most times. :(

  • Sorry to hear...we've had a lot of issues with our rates being increased drastically over the last year or so.

When it was just me and my kids (and we have a 2 story, 3 bedroom house, 1 1/2 baths) I was paying around $90-100 per quarter; so about $30-35 per month. (from like 2000-2008)

Then my oldest son moved, but my husband had started living with us, so still 4 of us, same house, and my bills went up to $180.00 per quarter, or $60.00 per month for the past year and a half or so. (2008-present)

Now...my oldest son moved back home in August, so only 1 more person in the house, and my most recent bill is $240.00!!!  Are you flipping kidding me!  They are saying that if we don't have any obvious leaks that we're aware of, we will have to pay to have the lines inspected.

Is it just me...or are these rates flipping ridiculous?  And yes, we recycle.

  • Nyrek thats cheap..  Ours in Defiance for the two of us was 80 with 50 being water every month.  The city increased all the rates again...so I would hate to see what it would be now.  Thank Heavens we are in BFE and use our pond.
  • I heard that! Our was atrosious this month too! This may sound stupid, but i honeslty had no idea a running toilet will run up your water bill!!

  • we live in Perrysburg, and our bill is typically between 180 and 220 each quarter.  I"ve just assumed that's normal because the neighbors said theirs is similar and we never had to pay water before because we rented in Toledo.

And yes, a leaky toilet would run up the bill because it was like the tank was never full.  It wasn't draining like when you flush, just enough that if it was doing this all night/day off and on for several weeks, it can add up.  The tank basically kept re-filling slowly. I'll have to call when I get home because I forgot the bill today.
