and the draaaaama has already started! Of course MIL won't call me to talk to me about anything so everything I hear is through my mom.
It appears that our set-up for the past 6 years isn't good enough anymore. Normally Christmas Eve DH and I go with his family to Christmas services. They used to have a midnight breakfast afterwards at their house, but that stopped a few years ago. Then in the morning, DH's immediate family opens up gifts and then his grandmother comes over late morning to see opening presents/give her her gifts, then MIL usually has a late lunch (starting around 1-2 pm). After lunch is over (around 3-4 pm), DH and I go over to my grandmother's house for Christmas dinner and to open gifts with my parents, grandmother, aunt and cousin.
But it seems that this year MIL doesn't want to have a late lunch, she wants to have a dinner (around 5 pm). Part of me is really frustrated with this because it just feels like she wants the entire day and isn't considering we have my family to visit as well. I could understand if we really changed her plans or something, but she still gets to do everything she wants to do. Christmas Eve service, morning presents, etc. but now expects us to stay all day for a dinner.
I plan on talking to DH about this later on and hope he'll knock some sense into her that if she wants this dinner now, we won't be present since we need to accomodate both families. And to think things went so smoothly over Thanksgiving I was hoping that things were starting to get better...
Re: It's 3 weeks until Christmas
We had this going with Thanksgiving. It wasn't good enough for SIL's mother to have it at MIL's house. ugh.
I'm sorry about your MIL. It sounds like an awful mess.
I think you are being rational with the request of mornings with MIL and evenings with your family.
That's a little insane and a lot rude of your MIL. She needs to understand the fact that you need to accommodate both families. I don't have much advice as my family lives 1000 miles away so it makes holidays really simple. We spend Thanksgiving in GA bc of work, and alternate where we are Christmas day. On the years that we don't do Christmas day in PA, we will go up a week before or a week after.
I did kinda put my foot down though and say we were doing PA for Christmas day this year, but DH didn't seem to mind.
Good luck!
