Pat just called and he won some national award for community college instructors (NISOD, I think). He gets to fly to Texas in May with the VP of the college to accept the award and all that good stuff.
I am so so so proud of him. Even though he's still technically an adjunct he takes his teaching SO seriously and he really puts his heart and soul into it. He has a passion for teaching that is just so awesome and I seriously am bursting at the seams with how proud of him I am.
Just had to share!

Re: So proud of Pat
Excellent news! I'm excited for him; I completely get his passion for teaching college.
And as far as I'm concerned, some of the best profs out there are adjuncts

WAY TO GO PAT!!!!!
Thats so great Jaime! I bet he is thrilled!
I'm not sure! It's not until Memorial Day-ish so I'm sure we'll figure it all out before then. It would be fun to make it into a mini-vacay if we could. Either way, it's ok with me!

WTG Pat!
Can someone explain exactly what is adjunct is versus a non-adjunct? I should know this...
Blog
Well at least at his school he's an adjunct because he's just contracted to teach classes. He's not an actual employee of the college, apart from the contract (so no benefits).

Mary, I'm technically an adjunct, even though I am an employee of the college, on the official faculty register, and have been working there for 6 years. If I get a full teaching load (4 classes/semester) I am eligible for benefits, but most of the time I'm parttime so I don't get benefits.
The main distinction is that my contract with the college expires at the end of each semester, and I get a letter every semester stating this. They have to renew my contract 2x/year. Most faculty at my college are on the tenure system; there are a few who are more permanent but remain non-tenured instructors (usually they don't hold a terminal degree).

CONGRATS PAT!!! AMAZING!!!!
Aron won the Instructor of the Year award last year for his community college. It was an amazing experience to go through that with him. I still have the picture from that day posted on my cube wall here at work!!
