Runners: I hurt my toe on my 10k.

Maybe a little personal or tmi (not sure how ya'll feel about this stuff...). Anyway... On my personal longer runs (5-6mi), my right 2nd toe from the big toe (pointer toe?) gets a little tender. My 10k last Thurs must have pushed me over the edge.

My poor toe is killing me. It's not the nail. It's just if you press directly into the tip from the front of the toe. It's also slightly swollen and looks redish/bluish. I thought if I rested it for a while, it would go away (like the tenderness does after my long runs), but it hasn't gotten any better. It's stayed as painful for a whole week!  It hurts to touch it - even if socks push a little too hard on it or when I pull the covers up when I'm in bed.  Last night, I stubbed it on my office chair and the pain almost sent me climbing through the roof. I decided it's been a week and that kind of pain isn't normal, so I made an appt w/ the podiatrist/orthopedic dept for tomorrow AM.

Anyway. Have you experienced this? Any ideas?  And I'm a little concerned what i'm in for tomorrow at the Dr. :- Hosting a party on Sat, so I can't be off my feet for it. If they want to do anything, I might need to reschedule.

Ugh. I hate pain. It just needs to go away.

Re: Runners: I hurt my toe on my 10k.

  • Ok I thought I was the only one!  I'm a beginner runner, just did my first 5K on Thanksgiving and my toe was killing me (pointer toe).  It hurt so bad that I assumed when I took my shoe off it would be bleeding, but it wasn't and it only hurt to the touch.  It lasted a few days.  I was thinking it was maybe from my shoe??  A week is a long time, glad your going to the dr! I'm sorry I don't have any advice, I would be interested in hearing what they say though!

  • I haven't experienced this, though a couple of nights ago I found a dried blister on the tip of one of my toes that I never knew I had.

Have you tried a bigger shoe, 1/2 a size up?  They say to buy 1/2 a size larger than normal shoe size to accomodate swelling feet when running.

I was fitted at a running store for my shoes... I usually wear 6-6.5 and my running shoes are 7s.

I have decent running socks, but I'm wondering if maybe I need better socks. I'm thinking maybe the sock is too tight and putting pressure on the toe as I run... ?

But why is this lasting so long? :(

  • I was having this same problem with my toes and decided to go up a half a size.  I have not had a problem since.  I think my feet must swell a lot when I run so I need the extra space.  Just for info I wear a size 6 to 6.6 regualr shoe and my running shoes are a 7.5.

     Hope that helps.

  • So, since it's been a week, do you think I should go to the DR still?

Or should I try a larger size running shoe? or try new socks?

I'm thinking a week with no improvement (and no running) might mean I should still go?

    Is it just bruised?

Ugh. I hate admitting I am hurt and need a Dr. I like to just be WELL and HEALTHY.

  • Honestly, it sounds bruised but I'm not a doctor either. Can you bend it just fine? Is it just pressing on that one spot that hurts?

Its up to you about going to the doctor. If its a 10-20 dollar copay.. then might be worth it. But if its more.. I might wait it out another week and not run.

It sounds like your foot is either swelling or sliding forward to hit the end of your shoe. Tight socks wouldnt cause you to get a bruise like that in my opinion.

I'd probably try a larger size shoe or make sure my shoes are tied tight enough that my foot is not slipping.

  • A, this is very common for runners!!

Easy advice: cut your toe nails as short as possible, wrap your toe in athletic tape pre run, and get larger shoes.

(In case you want to know, I deal with this pain, especially when I run marathons.  Somewhat TMI, but my toe nail is just finally growing out and getting back to normal from my marathon a full year ago.  Does it stop me from running?  No.  Last year after the marathon, I took about a week or so off and after that, I was back in the game.)

My nail seems perfectly fine. It's just literally the tip (like pressing into the very tip/top of the bone from the front of the body).  And my nails were clipped as short as possible before the run.  Gar! (I like sound effects)

    I'm confused. :)

  • A,

When I run really long intense runs, I sometimes bruise my nail itself.  Other times, like my half marathon 3 weeks ago, just the tip of my toe gets sore.  I blame it on my toes sliding and hitting the edge of my shoe.  A few of my other running buddies have the exact same problem, so you are not alone!  I hope this is the cause of your problem and it is not anything more serious!
