Holiday Tipping

Who all do you tip and how much??  Just curious on this and seeing what everyone else does....

Re: Holiday Tipping

  • There was a discussion about this in my office yesterday. Someone saw an article that listed who you should tip and how much, but we didn't really agree with the list. For example, it said you're supposed to tip your trash collector. How do you do that? Leave an envelope on top of your trash can and hope it doesn't just get dumped into the trash? If you're not home when the trash gets picked up, there doesn't seem to be a good way to deliver a tip.

I don't have a regular hair stylist now, but when I did, I gave her an extra tip around the holidays.

We add a tip for the delivery person to our bill for the newspaper year round, so we don't do anything special for the holidays because he's getting tipped all year, and frankly he doesn't do that great of a job since we have to call several times a year to report not getting our paper.

We do leave a gift for our mailman, usually a Starbucks or Caribou gift card for $20-25. Mail carriers are not supposed to accept cash tips, but you can give them gift cards.

We don't have kids - so no day care provider to tip. No cleaning service or lawn care/snow removal service for us either.

Andy gets a gift for his admin asst at work - usually a basket of wine (she's really into that) and a gift card to her favorite store. I get Target gift cards for the interns in my office.

  • Definitely our letter carrier.  As PP stated, they cannot accept cash or gifts, so you sort of have to be sly. Make sure you leave their gift card on a day that is not their scheduled day off!

Usually the newspaper delivery person as well, they make it easy by including an envelope with the paper around this time of year.  The first time we saw that, we were slightly appalled, but then we realized that we actually did want to tip, but since we auto-pay online, we'd have no other reliable way to make sure the delivery person got the tip.

And definitely the woman who cleans our house, because let's face it, she's a miracle worker.

The word you're looking for is SEX. I promise. No, it's not gender. It's sex. You're welcome.
  • Hm, interesting... it's never occurred to me to do any of this!  I have heard of people tipping their stylists extra around the holidays, but I always tip my stylist really well anyway, so it's never occurred to me to tip even higher around the holidays.  I've never heard of people giving gifts to the mail carrier, etc., although it seems like a super nice thing to do.  Just never crossed my mind!
  • Ok - the mail carrier thing is throwing me off, too. How many of you truly tip your mail carriers?

Ours used to be one of our neighbors, but she doesn't do our route anymore. I have no idea who the mail carrier is now and it seems to change quite often.

I don't want to be a scrooge, though - I just never thought to tip a mail carrier.

  • We don't tip our mail carrier (but it seems to be someone different quite often).  I usually do baked goods for our Schwans man (he looks forward to this time of year) and a nice give for our DCP.

  • See.here's my dilema...I used to tip the mail carrier.  But with recently moving, and we have grouping boxes, not to each individual mobile home, I have never seen them.  To add to that, MOST of my mail goes to my PO Box.  So I guess I dont' feel the need to tip for mail.

Schwan man does get tipped in form of baked goods.

Hairstylist gets tipped very well each time I go.

No lawn care, snow removal or newspaper delivery.
