Christmas Trees

Real or Fake?

Regardless of the answer above, how much does a real Christmas tree cost in your area?

Do you have 'cut your own' farms, or if not, where do they sell real ones in your area?

Re: Christmas Trees

  • Fake, I used to be a real die hard but they're a PITA, last year we took the plunge and bought a really nice one with LED lights and it's worth it.  The last real we bought was 40 bucks so I had enough and we had a small disaster that it didn't fit in our stand and we couldn't find a new one so we made it fit.  The cats drink all the water and I'm constantly vacuuming, so enough was enough.  I just light a balsam candle and you'd never notice the difference.  I like to enjoy it for longer too because a real one I would only leave up for a week.

  • Real... and I have no idea how much they cost. I've only had one tree in my life and that was in 2007 (I think that one cost $30-45??).
  • I love the smell, so we do real. There are a ton of farms around here, but we buy from the tree sale at our neighborhood fire department, which is only two blocks away, and they will drop it off at our house for free.  It is $40, but we splurge on it because it is one of their big fundraisers.

  • We do real.

We cut our own at a local tree farm.

It's just over $20 to cut it and you can get them around here pre-cut for under $20.

(this discussion came up last night with my friend in California about how expensive Christmas trees are out there compared to here)

  • I think you can get them at the home depot around here starting at $20.

Also, Jaime, you live in tree country!  We passed a ton of Christmas tree trucks going south on 95 in Maine on the way to my folks' house.  That could help explain the lower price.

  • Oh for sure, I know why they're cheap here!

I'm sure you saw a ton, I remember trips home from college always passing a million Christmas trees!

  • We had fake my whole life except for 1 yr in HS when I begged for a real one. Fake IS much easier and cleaner :)  But real does have something special. We have small fake ones right now. We'll see next year about getting a bigger one or a real one. I have no idea what they cost but am going to assume its the same for me as Becky!
  • Ha! I didn't mean for that to come across as a lesson in economics.  I've been hanging out with Bren (aka business grad student) for too long.

We were joking that we'd just cut one down off my parents' property.  Especially since they had three huge trees come down in that wind storm last week. Unfortunately, they were the wrong type of tree.

  • We do fake because we get more use for our $ but I LOVE real trees.

Real can go anywhere from 25-65 or so depending on the type of tree.

We have pre-cut lots and cut your own.  You can find pre-cuts anywhere, stores, homes, farms, etc. and cut your owns at the farms.

  • Growing up always fake, because of our cats. Now my parents have a real tree. We like to get our trees at the Shriners or fire department lots, b/c they are fundraisers, but they start around $45, we normally spend about $60. I think this year we might just go to Home Depot or Lowes for a $15-$20 tree b/c of time constraints and to save a little money. I think its the area we live in, my parents can go cut their own (huge) tree for $20 and they are just an hour away from us.

  • I have a fake one, but I always grew up with a real tree. When we lived at our first house, which was pretty small, we would buy a potted Christmas tree (about 4' tall). We'd move it outside after Christmas and keep it until the ground thawed in the spring. Then we would take it out to the 60 acres my parents owned (but hadn't built a house on it yet) and would plant it. We did this for 5-6 years. Now, 15 years later the trees are HUGE.

We've used a fake one the past few years, only because I don't want to worry about the needles with my cats...who are kind of obsessed with the Christmas tree. I'd like to start the tradition of getting a potted one and planting it on my parents property when B is older and can understand what we're doing.

There are a few Boy Scout troops that set up Christmas tree "lots" where they have a bunch of pre-cut trees. There are also a ton of "U-Pick" tree farms in our area. That's where we would buy our potted trees when I was younger.

  • We have a fake tree.  I have no idea how much a real one costs and since I live in the city we'd have to drive pretty far out to "cut our own" tree.

The real ones are sold in parking lots when you make it out to the suburbs.

  • I hate fake christmas trees, so we only do real! We cut our own at a tree farm that's about 30 minutes outside of the city and I think it's normally around $40.

  • Fake.  Our is pre-lite so it's a little bit easier in that regard and I like that I'm not cutting down a real tree every year.

I have no idea how much a real one costs in our area.  There are probably "cut your own" out in the more rural areas, but that's at least 1 1/2 hours of a drive for me.  I know Wisconsin had them all over the place.

Eventually, if we ever have actual land and  a single family house, I'd be interested in getting a tree with a root ball each year and then planting them in the back yard.  My coworker does this and the kids love it and name the trees.

  • REAL!!! I think fake trees are UnChristmassy, we always grew up w/ Real ones, the whole trek thru the woods, find one, take a picture, chop it down etc. I love BIG trees, when we were house hunting I would think of how big a tree I could get. We have 9 ft ceilings, so I have an 8ft tree in our living room. I put up w/ the needles, etc I love the smell.

It was $59, and we didn't even get to cut it down, they charge more to do that... I guess for the experience? The tree I wanted was $79 (ugh) so I got the $59 one. We may get our tree in Maine next year as we are up there enough. I love the "hunt" of the tree!

DH's BFF lives in Manhattan and he's from Maine. Him and his wife bought a tree for about $150, then they have to get it sprayed w/ fireproofing stuff, which was another $50 or so, and then the delivery fee was about $50, so they had a $250 tree, that came from Maine where he's from:) They have lofted ceilings, so it was HUGE, and their daughter loved it, but he was dying at how much he paid for a tree...

  • Real!  DH and I both love real Christmas trees so much.  When I was growing up, my dad was allergic to real trees so we had a fake one from about the time I was 5 through high school.  DH and his family always had a real one, so needless to say, I was pretty excited to start our tradition of getting a real tree when we moved in together 4 years ago.

Depending on size, they start at about $20 for a 5 ft tree and go up from there depending on type and height.  The super soft grand firs or whatever they're called can be up to $100+ at the tree farms.

There is actually some space adjacent to Pikes Peak Nat'l Forest that is designated as a 'cut your own tree' area, but you have to hike back there to do it!  It's crazy, and some years very very snowy!

  • I grew up with fake because my brother is so deathly allergic to real. And now J and I have a fake. When we have a bigger house with room for it I will get a real tree.

ETA:I have no idea anything about real trees since I have never had reason to look.

  • Real. Always had them growing up.  It made me sad when I moved into an apartment w/ DH and we had to have a fake one.  We spent Christmas at my mom's house, but after I moved out she went fake too.  I was thrilled last year when we finally had our own house and could have a real one again.

We are buying ours tonight and can expect to pay $45-$80 depending on where we go/what we find. There are places to cut our own, we tried that last year, but they didn't have any nice trees. Was quite disappointed.

  • We have a smallish fake one right now. I hate putting them up/spreading out the branches, but they are nice when they are prelit. I'd like to do reall someday, when we have a bigger house. I agree, they are just more special.

Around here, at Menards, you can get a tree for $20 or less, precut. Not sure how much they are at a tree lot, or cut your own at a farm. Never done that. The only time I cut my own tree was in college. We got a $5 permit from the DNR, went into the woods, and cut one down. That was fun! It was a real search to find a good tree!

  • I had a fake tree growing up. DH had a real one. He really wanted to get a real one once we were living together so I agreed. But the cats climb it and make such a mess. I gave it a try again last year, but got so fed up with having to vacuum needles every day. We bought a fake tree on Black Friday.

The tree we got last year from a you-cut in town was $50. You can get cheaper, probably closer to $40, if you go for an already cut one from the random places that sell trees. But the you-cut is more fun.

  • Real! I threw a tissy the first year my parents got a fake tree. We had to have them in apartments, and I hated them.

I think we paid $60-$80 last year for our tree, but it was super full, gorgeous, and really large. We'll probably go with a smaller one this year since it will be in the basement and we wont have the vaulted ceiling to work with.

We have "cut your own" farms, but you can buy real trees anywhere around here. Nurseries, obviously, gas stations, grocery stores, we get ours from a bike shop...random places, really.

  • Real or Fake?  Real

Regardless of the answer above, how much does a real Christmas tree cost in your area? Long needles are $20 and the short needles are $40-$75

Do you have 'cut your own' farms, or if not, where do they sell real ones in your area?  we went to cut your own tree farm, but I think this is the owners last year cuz the selection was not very good this year.

  • Real or Fake? Fake I am allergic and don't like spending 1/2 of December sneezing and wheezing

Regardless of the answer above, how much does a real Christmas tree cost in your area? I know that pre-cut they can be found for $15-20 in our area and there is a tree farm not far from my house

Do you have 'cut your own' farms, or if not, where do they sell real ones in your area? there are a few tree farms around that are cut your own. We can get the real ones just about anywhere. The grocery store, tree lots, one of the local gas stations....
