Gas fire places

So our house we bought this year has a gas fire place.  It never dawned on me that if we use it, obviously our gas bill is going to go up.  One of my friends on FB made a comment about it and how high the price goes up.  Anyone with a gas fire place want to give me an idea of how much your gas bill goes up when you use it?  TIA!

DH has made comments about wanting to have it converted to wood burning.  Any thoughts on that?

Re: Gas fire places

  • is it a gas starter wood burner or strickly fake wood where the gas lights up? If it actually burns the wood, after it gets going you can turn it off.

But regardless gas isnt that expensive and it shouldnt make your bill go up too much. Its been awhile since Ive actually had a gas fireplace but I dont remember it being that big of a surprise come winter.

  • Can I jump in with another gas fireplace question?

I've never had one before, and our new place has one but the key is missing. The landlord was going to get a new one, but hasn't yet. It's just a gas-starter, not the fake logs.

Can we use it just as a regular wood fireplace or will we explode the house? (I'm half-joking and half-serious Embarrassed)

  • We hardly notice a difference in the bill between using the heater and using the fireplace.  The fireplace still provides heat to the house.  I wonder if your friends tried not running theirs- the gas bill always jumps tremendously in the winter bc that's what warms the rest of the house.

The most important thing is that you open and cose the flu in conjunction with using the fireplace.  If you leave the flu open, warmed air will continuously leave the house.

I'm personally not a fan of wood fireplaces anymore.  Unless they're really large and spacious (i.e. built into the house plan), ashes get into the house, on the floor, and they're a PITA to clean.

To pp w/ gas starter, you can get a replacement key at HD or Lowes.  Just be sure to keep it off when you aren't using it.  No worries if you don't use the gas, just make sure your flu is open when you're using the fp and closed when it's not in use- that's the primary safety concern.

  • We have a full on gas fireplace and I don't notice any difference from the couple times we use it in the winter, to a month we don't. It's really hard for me to say, though, because our house also has a gas water heater and gas heater, so our bill skyrockets for a couple months no matter what.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • :::jealous of those with any kind of fireplace:::

I know my parents had a fireplace that was gas started... but once they got a good fire going, they'd turn it off and just let the wood logs burn off by themselves.

If you have the fake logs... ignore me.
