Best route Tampa to GA?

I surprised hubby with a weekend trip, we have never been to Georgia so I decided on Jekyll Island which is near Brunswick.

Any ideas on the best route to take?  Mapquest suggests I-75N to exit 354 which will get us to 301N, then after 80 miles we jump onto 295N and then 95N... how does that sound?  I live in Riverview so I can't imagine 80 miles of 301, esp. if it is as bad as 301 in Riverview!  We plan to leave around 3pm assuming I can leave work on time today.

Thanks! P.S. If you are familiar with that area and have any suggestions for food/attractions please let me know!

Re: Best route Tampa to GA?

  • That looks right! I live in Riverview too, I spent most of my childhood and then adult years in St Simons island, GA I was just there this weekend!

The Island is pretty dead at this time of year but still fun and beautiful enjoy!

  • ps not sure if you'll be venturing in SSI but If you do I'll give you some recommendations!
  • I would love some recommendations!  I figured it would be pretty dead, but we are going to relax and have fun so that is fine by me!  I want to go to Driftwood Beach as I heard it was gorgeous!  SSI doesn't seem too far, so let me know if there is anything we HAVE to do!

    Thanks!

  • That's probably a fine route. I drive from Tampa to Jacksonville a lot and I take 1-75 to exit 358. Go right off that exit, and take it down to the first major intersection, which I think is labeled 441. Go left onto that. As you're going down that, you'll see a sign after a little bit to veer off toward the slight right for 301 N. So that's another option of how to get on to 301 from 1-75. Maybe that would create less total time for you to have to be on 301.

Sorry if that was too confusing, your way if probably fine :)

I'm not too familiar with Jekyll Island but I remember going there a couple times as a kid, for the Summer Waves waterpark.

  • Well in SSI It?s pretty much just the village but the drive itself is beautiful if you have time I would got there for a walk the and dinner teh shops are really cute.

CJ?s has the best pizza but get the deep dish it?s amazing!!! For yummy a little nicer seafood crab daddy?s is soo good so is crab trap and Barbara jeans has the best chicken fried chicken and bread.

For drinks: Mullet Bay, Brogen?s (some of the d?cor is beachy cheesy)You can also walk the pier and go to the cutes 50?s style ice cream shop.

    BBQ- Beachcomber

Ill keep posting as I think of more stuff!

  • If you take that route, definitely watch your speed on 301.  Those small towns have lots of cops waiting to catch people speeding.  The speed limit drops from like 60/70 down to like 35, so make sure you pay attention and slow down!

Thanks SO much!  That would definitely NOT be a good way to start our getaway weekend!

Aww it sounds like a cute place!  I looked there but I found an incredible deal through Expedia at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, and it looks gorgeous!  What kind of shops do they have at SSI?  I LOVE antiques, are there any antiquey places there?

Haha, Waldo makes me laugh. There are even billboards as you approach it that warn you it's a speed trap. Basically any time you come across a "slow your speed" kind of sign on 301, make sure you obey. There are a few times even before Waldo where you go from 65 to 45 but then it picks up quickly again.

Aww yay! Maybe you can give me some tips about any good antique/thrift shops in the Riverview area... I have yet to find any great ones since we moved here 2 years ago.  And I lived in a great antique town so I need my fix! I will check those out for sure!
