Where can I volunteer and are their fresh markets around?

Dear Ladies,

It looks like I have a little more time on my hand then I thought, but I would like to find an organization to volunteer my time but will also help me get to know Boston and Quincy better. Does anyone know of some organizations or are currently volunteering in one? I am interested in youth and education along with helping community.

Also I was wondering where can i get the most fresh fruit and vegetables or fish as well around here? Does Boston have those open markets that I see on TV and what type of festivals come around here?

Anniversary

  • I usually look for volunteer opportunities on www.volunteermatch.org

I don't know about farmers markets in Quincy, but in Boston every Friday and Saturday there's the age-old Haymarket set up adjacent to Fanueil Hall.  Some info here and you can also look it up on Yelp.  You could make a day of walking around some combo of Boston Common, Charles Street (super quaint area), Newbury Street (shopping, shopping, shoppin), Faneuil Hall, and Haymarket.  You eventually should walk the Freedom Trail too, either on a self-guided tour you can download to an iPod or with an actual guided tour.  You'll learn all about the great history of this city.

    HTH!

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Boston Cares is an umbrella agency for a lot of volunteer opportunities in the area.

  • In terms of festivals, my favorites have been the Phantom Gourmet Festivals. They have a BBQ festival, Wine & Food Phest, Beer Phest and Food Festival on Yawkey Way. Always a good time. Smile

And during the season there's the SOWA market in the south end which is a farmers market and there are local artisans selling their goods and products. And an antique market!

    I love this city.

  • That was really helpful and I immediately looked all that information up. However, how do I find out when the bbq, wine and food phest, beer phest and food festival on Yawkey Way are? What goes in in Quincy community??

The food festival is the only thing on Yawkey way. I think the rest are at Suffolk Downs and the Bayside Expo Center

I live north of the city so I'm not much help with things going on in Quincy.

Oops. I was wrong: Food festival on Landsdown St; BBQ and Beer Fest at Suffolk Downs, Wine & Food at Bayside Expo Center. The BBQ is in June; Wine & Food in April; Beer Fest in October; Food Festival in September. They are soooo much fun!

And I don't live near Quincy so I'm not much help there. Good luck!
