do you say merry christmas?
I was listening to the radio yesterday and they were talking about how people should say "Merry Christmas" and not anything like "Happy Holidays".
What do you say? Why?
Re: do you say merry christmas?
Lol. Yeah I heard something like that once. I don't mind what people say, as long as it isn't crazy/obscene. I typically repeat what people say to me, "Merry Christmas" is what I say most often.
I usually say "Happy Holidays"
My mom is Jewish and my dad is Catholic so I was always taught that Happy Holidays covers everyone and isn't offensive to anyone (my grandma gets offended when people tell her Merry Chrismas).
I thought the radio discussion was sort of funny because apparently these people are offended when someone tells them Happy Holidays.
I'm not offended by either. I generally say "Happy Holidays" just to cover everything but someone tells me "Merry Christmas" I'll repeat it.
Actually though when I worked in retail for 2 Christmas seasons they were very adamant that you say "Happy Holidays". We could not tell people "Merry Christmas" unless they said it first to us. I actually had soemone get offended when I told them "Happy Holidays". She said she was going to boycott us since we could not say "Merry Christmas".
Part of my pre-layoff job at a big grocery retailer was handling high-level customer complaints that couldn't be resolved at store level (company policy, etc.). The last Christmas I worked there, we had a lady sooooo upset because the cashier had told her we wouldn't let her say "Merry Christmas." First of all, that wasn't our policy AT ALL, and then I had to try to placate Grandma and find out why the cashier thought that in the first place.
I typically say Happy Holidays, but will say Merry Christmas if someone says it to me first. I think people who make too big a stink about it either way need to find some real problems.
I never say anything first (to cashiers, retail clerks, and the like) and generally just respond with "thank you" to whatever anyone says.
It wasn't policy where I worked either it was just handed down by the managersat the branch I worked at. It was "preferred" that you said "Happy Holidays" since then it would include everyone not just Christians who celebrated Christmas for religious reasons.
WORD.
Out in public, I usually just say, "You too!" to whatever people say to me. I say Merry Christmas to people in person since that's what most of my friends and all of my family celebrate. If I saw one of my Jewish friends during Hanukkah, I would say Happy Hanukkah.
I definitely agree about this. For heaven's sake, anyone that says that is just trying to be nice. I can't imagine getting seriously offended over something like this.
I say "you too!" back to anyone who wishes me happy/merry/whatever. For some reason, this reminds me of that Frasier episode where Frasier and his dad are having a fight about Christmas, and they end up shouting "Merry Christmas" all sarcastically to each other. It's a funny one.
