How to say no

Dh and I figuring out how to say no to a rather persistent friend.

Backstory: We just got back from vacation last night. We're tired and we don't want to drive anymore. We have a friend in the military who has moved from Monterey to Colorado. He's going to be back in Monterey for his graduation this weekend. He called up yesterday all excited saying he had rented this big suite in a swanky hotel Saturday night for various family in town and it's free Saturday night and he wants us to use it as a romantic getaway and meet up with him to see him before he goes back to Colorado. He's pretty insistent. He also said earlier he'd be in Monterey Dec. 17 thru the 24 -- but I'm not sure if he really is and we can see him then or if he flubbed the dates when he first told us.

I can't go. I signed up to bake 12 dozen cookies in the next four days for Habitat and there's no way I can do that being gone two of the days. Dh just flat doesn't want to go. He's tired and doesn't want to drive 2.5 hours and he has to work Sunday night.

How do we say no?

Re: How to say no

  • "Aw, that's really nice of you but we really can't.  Thanks anyway."  breathe and repeat in response to the next comment.
  • I think I'd say, "I'm really sorry, but we just got back from vacation and we have a lot of obligations for community stuff and things to catch up on. Let's get together next time." And then send him a card wishing him congrats.
  • I like the combo of the pp.

Say thank you for thinking of us but we are unable to celebrate in your graduation. The next time you are in the area, we will definitely treat you to dinner!

  • Thanks guys. Dh politely told him no, though he did commit us to going up the weekend during his graduation. So the last weekend before Christmas normally spent running around tying up loose ends before Christmas, we'll be traveling. Great. I hate being an adult sometimes.
