pet urine question

I bought a rug on CL for a good deal for my DD's room. I vaccuumed the rug before we ever took it in her room and that was a couple of days ago. Now the rug reeks of dog urine. Any tips for how to get the smell out. I didn't notice any stains on it when I picked it up but I did notice today when I flipped it over that there is a stain on the underneath which means that something was either spilled or someone (I'm thinking a dog) urinated on the rug at some point... HELP!!

Re: pet urine question

  • Use an enzyme cleaner, like Nature's Miracle.  It's available in a red and white container at Petsmart.  You have to completely saturate the carpet, then let it dry, so it may take a couple days.  It'll get the smell out and prevent the dog from trying to mark over it in the future.

  • Not sure if your using a steam cleaner..if so this is a great product for removing urine...professional strength Pet Plus Carpet Detergent.  Really works great and smells amazing!

Will this work if I have no idea how old the stain/urine is? We've used this for our puppy in the past so I have it here, it's worked amazing on our rug when we use it right away... but this stain is old and NOT from our dog. It's the previous rug owners dog... Let me know if you think this will work because if so I'll try it!

  • The enzymatic cleaner should still work. It breaks down the odor causing molecules, so it shouldn't matter if it's a new or old stain. After completely dry, I would sprinkle some baking soda on and let it sit for a while, then vacuum it up!

  • This is going to sound crazy but my Grandma told me this and it actually worked.  Take warm water and baking soda spray the area heavily, take tin foil and put over the area and then take something heavy like books and put that on top of the area.  let it sit there for about a week.

  • We have a 1.5 yr old dog and cream carpet in our bedroom.

I just recently borrowed my SIL's Bissell Green Machine cleaner and used the pet cleaning solution.  It got out all of the stains (some of which were 6+ months old).  It was really disgusting, but you could smell the urine coming out of the carpet during cleaning.

We haven't had an accident in there since.

  • I agree with the enzyme cleaner.  I would practically soak it with the cleaner then let it dry.  If you can I would let it air out too in fresh air and sunshine soiled side up.
  • Natures Miracle from Petsmart by far is what I've found works best to get the smell out....saturate the spots(s) though. let it sit for a few mintues try to get most of it up with a towel so it's not totally soaking and then let the rest air dry..they sell it in a variety of sizes of bottles..the bigger ones are nice b/c it's more cost effective I've found..and it's nice to have for future emergency stains as vomit.
  • Nature's Miracle works great! Another product that has been really reliable is Carbona, you can buy it any grocery store.
