Re: Christmas Traditions

  • Send out cards? Yes

Include "Our Life This Year" letter?

    NO

    Tree? Real or Fake?

    Real.

Open presents Christmas Eve or Day?

Christmas Eve with Mike's family, then we exchange gifts with each other that night. The kids will probably open everything on Christmas morning. We haven't decided yet (I grew up opening everything x-mas eve, as my dad's birthday is Christmas day). Christmas day we open with my family.

    Turkey, Ham, or other?

Usually ham on Christmas eve and standing rib roast on Christmas day.

    Kids believe in Santa?

    Sure.

Elegant decor like all gold and silver or fun decor like more colors are more better?

Most of my stuff is silver and gold but the tree doesn't have that theme.

    All-time favorite gift?

Wow, that's tough. There have been so many! I guess I'll go way back and say my yellow lamb Puffalump that my grandpa gave me the Christmas before he died. I was probably 9.

Send out cards?  this will be our first year sending out cards

Include "Our Life This Year" letter? oh hellz no

Tree? Real or Fake? Real, we love going and finding the perfect tree each year.

Open presents Christmas Eve or Day? we pick one to open up on eve and the rest in the morning only after the stockings have been opened.

    Turkey, Ham, or other? Ham

Kids believe in Santa? Dogs do

Elegant decor like all gold and silver or fun decor like more colors are more better?  Elegant but not over the top elegant

All-time favorite gift?  hmm that's hard but I think the year Tony bought me a bunch of plactic hangers and a robe as a joke and I got all pissed thinking that was all he got me but he hid a Tiffany necklace in the pocket of the robe.  Either that or my kitchen aid mixer.

  • Send out cards?  Not in the last few years.

Include "Our Life This Year" letter?  Heavens, no.

Tree? Real or Fake?  Always real, and preferably cut down from a tree farm rather than from a lot.

Open presents Christmas Eve or Day?  Both.  Growing up we did presents from my dad's side Christmas Eve, and everyone else (including my parents) Christmas Day.  Now we do Christmas Eve with my in-laws and Christmas Day with my family.

Turkey, Ham, or other?  Never ham.  Sometimes turkey, but something different every year.  Occasionally a crown roast of pork, lately we've had a lot of beef.

Kids believe in Santa?  Too little for that yet.

Elegant decor like all gold and silver or fun decor like more colors are more better?  A mish-mash of ornaments that we've collected since we were kids, and all the ornaments my step-son made for Fran as a kid.  F and a friend of ours have had a tradition for years where they exchange a Santa decoration every year, so we have lots of Santas around the house.  I'm partial to snowmen.

All-time favorite gift?  My ten-speed bike.  My sister and I spied on my parents and figured out we were getting them, then my parents were on to us.  So they didn't put the bikes under the tree where they usually put our big present.  They put stuffed monkeys there.  We opened all our presents, then dad sent us out to the porch with the garbage bags full of wrapping paper and our bikes were there.

  • cards: yes

    real tree

Christmas day gifts. SANTA DOESN'T ARRIVE BEFORE THAT, DUH

    Turkey

    Kids? Wha?

used to be gold and red, more fun stuff infiltrating

My parents surprised my sister and her family with a trip to DisneyWorld a coupld of years ago.  that was awesome to watch.   i actually filmed it because I knew ahead of time.  They never would have been able to afford it themselves.

  • Send out cards?
Never got around to it last year. Might do one this year as a moving announcement, I can't remember who has our new address and who doesn't

Include "Our Life This Year" letter?
    Nope

    Tree? Real or Fake?
    Real. Always

Open presents Christmas Eve or Day?
    Christmas day

    Turkey, Ham, or other?
Turkey. Although the big meal for us is breakfast with T's family.

    Kids believe in Santa?

Elegant decor like all gold and silver or fun decor like more colors are more better?
Colors for us. Trying to keep it within a theme, i.e. mostly red.

    All-time favorite gift?
Hmm, that's a tough one. Probably a TV for my bedroom when I was like 12. I never in a million years thought my parents would actually get one for me.

  • Send out cards?  Yes, way too many of them.

Include "Our Life This Year" letter?   No... but we did get this card this year, and put a few little blurbs.

Tree? Real or Fake?   Growing up, always real... but we went with fake since its cheaper and the dog doesn't eat it.

Open presents Christmas Eve or Day?   Day, definitely.

Turkey, Ham, or other?    Christmas Eve, always ham at his grandfather's. Christmas Day, varies... but often turkey since we know we're having ham the night before.

Kids believe in Santa?   Doesn't know about him yet.

Elegant decor like all gold and silver or fun decor like more colors are more better?    Fun decor.

All-time favorite gift?   That's a hard one... my parents always got me great stuff, and Trav is normally really spot on with what he gets me as well. I did get engaged on the 23rd of December, so that was a pretty great "christmas gift".

  • imageFallinAgain:

Send out cards?  Usually yes, but this year I don't have the energy.  Will do better next year.

Include "Our Life This Year" letter?  No!  People either already know what happened to us or don't care enough to read a letter.

Tree? Real or Fake?  I grew up with a beloved fake tree that my parents just threw away because it was disintegrating.  Husband and I have gotten real trees for the past 2 years because he is racist against fake trees.  But we got them from a lot, which I'm learning today is taboo.  I don't even know where the nearest tree farm is, or that I was supposed to be going to one.  I feel like I've been carrying a baby around in a Bjorn, thinking I was making it happy, only to learn that I'm giving it hip dysplasia and should be using a Moby instead.

Open presents Christmas Eve or Day?  One present Christmas Eve (always pajamas, to be worn that night).  The rest Christmas Day.

Turkey, Ham, or other?  My family:  turkey.  H's family:  Ham.

Kids believe in Santa?  Meh.  I don't think so.

Elegant decor like all gold and silver or fun decor like more colors are more better?  More colors and more hodge podge the better.

All-time favorite gift?  Tie between the original NES (because I got it when I was 7 and ran around the house screaming) and the white courduroy baseball cap with the patch that said "BEER NUTS" that my grandparents got me when I was a teen (because it was so random).

  • Send out cards? Not regularly, but this year, yes.

Include "Our Life This Year" letter? No.

    Tree? Real or Fake? Fake.

Open presents Christmas Eve or Day? We celebrate with my whole family on Xmas Eve; then just with my parents on Xmas Day.

Turkey, Ham, or other? Ham on Xmas Day, but even better snack foods galore on Xmas Eve.

Kids believe in Santa?  I asked this b/c I just found out that my H never did and expects(ed) that ours would not.  I was like, um, no.

Elegant decor like all gold and silver or fun decor like more colors are more better?  Fun.  I like a little tacky in my Xmas.

All-time favorite gift? I have a cross necklace that I didn't care for at all when I received it but cherish it now.

  • Send out cards?   Always

Include "Our Life This Year" letter?  Never

    Tree? Real or Fake?  Real

Open presents Christmas Eve or Day?  Family presents Christmas Eve; Santa presents (stockings and a few small things) Christmas Day.

    Turkey, Ham, or other?  Both

    Kids believe in Santa?  Yes

Elegant decor like all gold and silver or fun decor like more colors are more better?  Fun -- the random, kitschy sentimental ornaments are my favorite.

All-time favorite gift?  My dog, when I was 8

  • Send out cards? Intermittently

Include "Our Life This Year" letter? I don't even know what this is. So no.

Tree? Real or Fake? Growing up was also real, but our house now is too small for real so fake.

Open presents Christmas Eve or Day? Christmas Eve with my family, Christmas Day with his.

Turkey, Ham, or other? Other: Fish

Kids believe in Santa? How else do you get them to behave all year?

Elegant decor like all gold and silver or fun decor like more colors are more better? All one color, whatever it is that year. Usually white.

    All-time favorite gift? Leg lamps.

  • imageFallinAgain:

Send out cards?  I did the year Andy was born, but never before, and likely not after.

Include "Our Life This Year" letter? Not even if I did send cards.

Tree? Real or Fake? Fakeity Fake Fake

Open presents Christmas Eve or Day? We have always done 12/24 with my Dad's side of the family, so some presents there.  It was also a tradition for us kids to open one from our parents that day.

Turkey, Ham, or other? Fish on Christmas Eve (we are too lazy to actually figure out the Italian "Seven Fish" dinner, so we just do a mish mash of easy to make dishes), misc. meat on Christmas Day

Kids believe in Santa? Heck yeah.  My siblings and parents "let" me believe for far longer than I actually did...it was just too much fun for my brother to point up to the North Star and say it was Santa on his way to Denver.  Andy will receive the same treatment.

Elegant decor like all gold and silver or fun decor like more colors are more better?  I will This Fallin.  Christmas deserves a little tack factor.

All-time favorite gift? I always loved getting a new Barbie for Christmas.  I could tell immediately by the shape of the box, so I would spend the days leading up to Christmas trying to guess which one it was.

    Colors! Lots of colors!

Hrm. The year I got my Kirsten doll. Though this year's Kindle will probably win out. Wait, does it count if I buy it myself?

  • Send out cards? Sometimes. Probably not this year. Lots of other stuff going on between now & Christmas.Include "Our Life This Year" letter? NooooooooooooooooooooooTree? Real or Fake? RealOpen presents Christmas Eve or Day? Day. We'll be going to Lorne's extended family's for Christmas  Eve though and I think they do stuff then, so we'll exchange presents with them then and do Santa/family gifts on Christmas day.Turkey, Ham, or other? Both. We like meat.Kids believe in Santa? YesElegant decor like all gold and silver or fun decor like more colors are more better? Red & gold balls, mishmash of other ornamentsAll-time favorite gift? Kid: Nintendo when I was 7. We were poor and sure that we would never get one. "Santa" cut back for awhile to save to get it for us.  Adult: iPod from Lorney. It was completely unexpected; I'd mentioned maybe once that I was saving up to get one.

  • Send out cards?
Intermittently -- we don't more often than we do

Include "Our Life This Year" letter?
No, but Mr. Spiderman did type up a little synposis that fit on the inside of the card one year if I remember right.  I actually like reading those things, but that might be because I don't get many and am not FB friends with relatives.

    Tree? Real or Fake?
As real as real can be.  Always picked out and sawed down at a tree farm ourselves.  I weep for people who can't do the same, but I realize I just lucked out with where I live.

Open presents Christmas Eve or Day?
Christimas Day.  We used to beg our parents to let us open one on Christimas Eve like all our friends seemed to do, but they never relented.  My mom did always give us new PJs on Christimas Eve, waiting for us when we got home from our Aunt & Uncle's house.

    Turkey, Ham, or other?
Growing up, we mostly ate turkey.  I think we've had ham before.  Nowadays we have pork loin.

    Kids believe in Santa?
Mr. Spiderman and I disagree on this point.  He never believed in Santa and I did.  I want my kids to believe in Santa.  I plan to win this argument.

Elegant decor like all gold and silver or fun decor like more colors are more better?
    Hodgepodge of sentimental favorites.

    All-time favorite gift?
I can't think of any one in particular.  I have gotten a lot of great gifts.

  • Send out cards?  Usually.

Include "Our Life This Year" letter?  No

Turkey, Ham, or other?  Ham on Christmas Eve, Prime Rib on Christmas Day.  Mimosas with gift unwrapping.

  • Send out cards?  Nope-I keep saying I'm going to but I never get around to it

Include "Our Life This Year" letter?  No, I don't recall ever receiving one either

Tree? Real or Fake?  Fake...I never had a real tree growing up and always try to convince my H to get one but no luck so far.

Open presents Christmas Eve or Day?  When I was a kid, "Santa" would visit us on Christmas eve and give my brother and I one present, usually we each got the same thing-a little keyboard and a bear rug are 2 examples I remember.

My H & I open 1 gift on Christmas Eve before he goes to work and we also save 1 gift for his (Orthodox) Christmas

Turkey, Ham, or other?  We don't have a set traditonal meal, but when I was a teenager my family started getting Chinese take-out for Christmas Eve dinner after church

Kids believe in Santa?  When we have them, they will

Elegant decor like all gold and silver or fun decor like more colors are more better?  Fun, lots of stuff from childhood and cute stuff we've collected together over the years

All-time favorite gift?  Claddagh ring my H bought me our 1st Christmas together

  • I have a friend who sends the "what we did this year" letter, and I'll be honest.. .I kinda like it.  She lives in London, so I don't hear from her often, but I like her.  And her updates are always always cool places that she's travelled and stuff. HOWEVER, she had a baby this year and she has become one of these chicks who incessantly updates you on what the kid is doing, so I bet this year's letter is going to suck it.
