Washing machine questions....

I need to buy a new washing machine and I want to get a front loading one.  I've read reviews saying they can smell moldy.  Has anyone had this problem?  How did you fix it?  Can someone recommend a make and model number of a washing machine they love.  I'm looking at consumer reports currently, but even their highest rated ones have very mixed reviews.

Re: Washing machine questions....

  • They can smell because some water remains on the gasket at the opening of the machine after a load is done, and if you close the door without letting that dry, it may start to grow mildew or mold.

I prevent this by wiping up the water after a load, and leaving the front door open overnight to air dry. Some washers might have a better gasket design to allow for better drainage, I'm not sure.

I have a Whirlpool which I like, but it's a condo sized one so I'm not sure if it would be helpful to you.

  • I kept hearing about the smell with the ring or something with the front loaders and this really worried me. So we ended up getting a top loader HE. Its a Kenmore elite.I love it and i have seen a decrease in our water bill.
  • I have an LG front loading set that I got a little over a month ago.  I really love it so far.  The manual for mine also suggests wiping the door and around the ring.  Also, Tide makes a washing machine cleaner that I plan on using.
  • I have heard they make top loaders that are as efficient as the front loaders. I have a top loader that is about 7 years old and I just leave the lid open to air out all the time. When its time to replace it I wouldn't buy an appliance that requires special cleaning just to not get moldy, my day is busy enough without adding the chore of DRYING a WASHING machine..... sounds a little ridiculous to me.
  • We had a front loader that had an awful moldy smell. And, of course, when inspected closely, we found build-up around our rubber gasket.  We replaced the gasket and cleaned the filters.  It did not work.

A repair company advised me to wipe the washing machine dry after using it... and also follow up with 3 cycles of Affresh tablets (found at local Lowe's).... use with your washing machine's Clean cycle.... OR.... continuously fill your washing machine with water as it goes through a cycle.

None of this worked for me. I was so frustrated and hated the moldy smell in my towels.  I ended up buying a top loader. By the way, there are class action law suits pending against 4 major washing machine companies.... regarding the mold build-up issue.
