Cracks in hardwood floors - driving me crazy

Hi all,

Does anyone have any ideas about how to get crumbs/dust from spaces between hardwood floor boards?  Ours were never laid properly and its driving me nuts.  My dyson does not have enough suction to get them from in there.  Sometimes I resort to using the crevice tool, but there is too much to do that way. Any ideas?

Thanks!

  • I don't know if this will work, but could you fill some of the more troubling cracks with a clear epoxy type product?

I would try this as well; however, before that happens, you'll still need to get all the crumbs/dust out.

Maybe you could try this....Yesterday I was cleaning the dust and debris from my keyboard using those canned air cleaner.  They come in an aerosol type can that you affix a narrow straw (included) to to "aim" at crevices.  I picked mine up (3M brand Dust Remover - purple can) at Target for around $5.  You should be able to clear out your crevices with something like that, short term.

  • I don't know about cleaning the cracks but I'd be hesitant about filling them. As the seasons change, the floor needs room to shift and settle. If you fill the cracks, you might end up ruining the wood.

  • I am with ring_pop on this ~ do not just fill it esp with expoxy stuff. you need to go to a homedepot or lowes and talk to someone in the flooring dept. there is a wood filler made for this and it will work when the floor shrinks and expands with the weather.

When we moved in to this house the floors looked horrible. WE honestly thought we would have to have them replaced. We hired a floor restorer and honestly I thought my dh lied to me and had them all replaced cause they looked THAT good... It was very inexpensive to do our 3 bedroom house that is wall to wall wood floors except the bathrooms. they did all the floors/closets/stairs all for under 2k and it was awesome. our family could not believe that they came out so great! It might be in your best interest to hire someone even just to fill in the gaps professionally this way you will have some kind of work guarantee. you also want to make a guarantee for more than a year so you can go thru a year of seasons to see how it works with temp changes...

    good luck

  • As for filling the cracks, the floor guys tried to fill them with wood-colored epoxy, but, what the previous posters said is true - after one season change, the cracks remain, now with some dried epoxy stuck in them as well.

The air blast is a creative idea!  I will try that if I have a stubborn spot...  though, the downstairs is about 4,000 square feet... so you can imagine how much hardwood we have (we have very little carpeted- just the bedrooms).

A door to door salesman tried selling me a Kirby vaccuum, and there was a flat attachment on there that was for hard wood.... it worked very very well.... but those vaccuums are $2,000+, and I just can't justify that cost.

To the previous poster who restored her floors, did you have cracks?  Typically they buff a layer of wood off and put polyurethane on top... which is fabulous looking... but I'm wondering if you had large noticeable gaps (like, the width of 3 quarters together)?

  • yep we had some big gaps. he filled them with wood filler. I also had huge parts of my floors where the elderly lady had a window open upstairs and she never went up there for a long time and it looked like water damage, thank god it was just dirt!!! yes some of the gaps were about that size. a professional will fill parts like that with slivers of wood. I will try to find some pics of before and after to show the condition before and after.

this was honestly the best paid labor that we had done on the house. everything else we have done ourselves. this was something we just did not want to screw up!!!
