A couple of weeks ago I started to develop a rash under my white gold wedding and e-ring. For about a week I thought it was just the change in weather up here in MN and my newly dry skin was being irritated by the rubbing of the rings. Then the rash started to develop a bunch of painful oozing mini blisters! The pain would wake me up at night. I would take a day off of wearing my rings and the blisters would slightly clear but as soon as I put the rings back on it started up again.
I haven't worn them for four days now and my poor finger is so severely scaley and red that it looks like I got branded. No blisters at least. A nurse at work said she's seen it before where people who haven't had a metal allergy suddenly develop one only to have it for the rest of their lives. So now I am freaking out and even crying. There's no way I can wear these rings that I have waited my entire life to wear! DH tried to console me by saying he'll buy me a platinum setting so I'll still have my rings but that still might not do the trick. I think I'll get some allergy testing done before we make any big purchase or ditch the rings all together.
Thanks for listening. Just had to vent. Have any of you heard of this before and if so what helped or alternatives do you know of?
Re: Allergic to Wedding & E-Ring
Oh my gosh, how awful for you! Your poor fingers.
I have metal allergies that make it hard to wear any jewlery, so it was definitely a concern for me when we were shopping for my rings. Instead of platinum, I chose palladium because it's lighter weight, less expensive and the jeweler said it was hypoallergenic. Platinum may be, as well, but I didn't ask about it because I was happy with palladium. I've worn my rings every day for 2 years and never had a problem. GL, I hope you find a solution that works for you!
Ouch...totally can relate. This has happened to me as well, with both rings. Has there been any change in your overall diet?
For the longest time I could not figure out what it was when it happened to me and low behold, you know what it was, pineapple! Yes, pineapple!
I am huge lover of most fruits, and this was just a process of elimination. The acidtiy in the fruit and the reaction of the metal on my skin was instanious. It was so painful, my finger was so swollen and blistery. So regrettably I have completely cut out this particular fruit all together. It has been clear for the last 2 1/2 years. My dh completely didn't believe it till he saw the results.
Hope your finger heals up soon. Don't give up yet.
I've had all sorts of allergies and rashes all my life and it's always so hard to figure out what the culprit is! It can be anything! So any of what the ladies have had to say so far may be the case! But mine is yet another one. So lots of things for you to try to see what is causing yours.
For me, I was allergic to my engagement ring from the get-go. I went to see a dermatologist and got a cream for it and it got better. But at the same time, the soap I was using to wash my hands was the culprit. So first, I had to switch to Dove (which I was already using for my body wash, but ended up having to use it just for washing my hands too) and I had to take my time when washing my hands more to make sure the soap is all washed off (it's harder to wash it all off between your finger and the ring). Then with that, plus the cream, I finally healed, and now I just have to be more careful about washing the soap completely off my hands and I haven't had that allergic reaction since then!
I hope you find the culprit and I hope it gets better soon!
I'm allergic to my rings too. Are yours white gold or yellow gold? For me, it's the white gold because it has nickel mixed into it so it's silver coloured. I get them redipped in rhodium to keep the nickel away from my skin. Truthfully, I'd really like to change my settings... but I'm super attached to my old ones. You know... these are my rings!
FWIW, my allergies flare up more when I'm under high stress or it's really hot out. I wear my rings out, but always take them off as soon as I get home.

They are white gold and I thought it might have something to do with the rhodium as well. I just got them re-dipped right before our wedding in March so I was hoping to go a bit longer before I'd have to do that again. I also would like to get a different setting as the one I have isn't something I would have picked for myself but DH obviously loved it and it means a lot to him that he picked it out.
Thanks to everyone for their advice! I have some great starting points on how to start to takle this.
