Cleaning a convection oven?

My Thanksgiving pie spilled in my oven :( New house, first time baking in it, and I smoked us out. Oops. Now  I need to get this horrendous burnt on caramel goo off the bottom of the oven. I bought Easy Off (one of them, not sure which) and in tiny print it says not for use with a convection oven. Another one I found on their website says you can use it with porcelian, which is what the interior of the oven is. But before I go all gung-ho with the Easy Off I was hoping to find someone with experience cleaning a convection oven.

It does have a self-cleaning option, but I don't want to use it because it will smoke terribly. I need to clean before I let it self clean. I still can't believe I forgot to put the darn cookie sheet in there!

Re: Cleaning a convection oven?

  • I made an apple pie some time ago and some of the apple goo spilled and burnt itself onto the bottom of the oven. But sugar is water soluble! I soaked a few paper towels with water and let the wet paper sit on the burnt stuff overnight. The next morning I just wiped it off.

I feel like an asshat right now. I didn't even think that, oh hey you know, sugar is water soluble. Oh my. I shall try this when I go home tonight. It may have sat for too long at this point, if that's the case I shall go with one of the Easy Off products, that seem like they would be ok. Thank you.

  • We used a magic eraser to clean ours. Test in an inconspicuous area first though.

We also have a liner now that MIL got for us. It's basically a sheet that goes in the bottom of the oven to catch future spills.
