I'm considering getting DH a GPS thing for Christmas. He's horrible with directions; anytime he needs to go somewhere new he ends up calling me to tell me where he is and ask me how to get where he's going. I think he could really benefit from a GPS system. Here are my questions.
1. Do you also have to pay for a service or are you good once you've bought the system?
2. Do you have one you'd recommend?
Thanks. I know I can research through consumer reports or whatever but you guys are easier and I know I can trust what you tell me.

Re: ? about GPS
from my experience of owning one (i.e. i don't have loads of experience with them in general), it comes with software (maps) already installed, so you don't have to have a service. but you can update your maps every year, so that might be a cost. or if you want to download maps for other countries.
we have a garmin, and we really love it. tom tom is another brand that seems to be good. i have friends who have them and like them. as for what model, it just depends on what features you want.

edit: some of them come with free annual downloads, which might be something to consider when buying, too.
We have a TomTom and love it. You don't have to pay any service fees unless you want extra-special features added. We probably should plug ours in to update the maps - thanks for the reminder!
I would recommend getting one of the newer models that says the street name outloud. Sometimes the pronunciation is a little bit off, but it's safer to hear that than try to read the screen to see when you're supposed to turn/exit.

We loved our Garmin until DH lost it.
They do get you with the maps (I think the upgrade was $100 last time I looked), so I'd look for a deal with free map upgrades. They try to get you to buy them yearly and they are sometimes necessary if you drive where there is a lot of new development.
I bought a fancier garmin over a year ago and have had multiple problems with it, I'm so disappointed. it's partly my fault because I should have spoken up before my warranty expired, but I travel so much and couldn't be without it for a week much less however long it would take them to fix it.
1. the connector to charge it somehow got bent or something so I had to buy a new one. this may or may not have been my fault - I recommend buying a case for the GPS so this doesn't happen. I was just throwing it in my purse.
2. the touch screen is all effed up - I press S and it types in P. super annoying. the tech guy walked me through recalibrating it but it hasn't been fixed. he then said they could fix it for $99 - I went ballistic since I can buy a new one for less than that and he lowered the price to $49. but I still haven't sent it in.
3. I bought a unit with "lifetime" traffic - it no longer is showing me traffic (another issue the tech guy said he could fix if I send it in) AND it never showed traffic for mopac. apparently, they don't cover that area even though it's basically the main route to downtown.
maybe I just got a lemon, but I'm about to chuck it out the window. but I know the garmins rated high so maybe you'll have better luck.
I love my Garmin. I'm on my second one now so I could get traffic updates. It has saved me so much time, energy and frustration.
I paid for the unit, and then it was $100 for lifetime internet- traffic and weather. It came with pre-loaded maps, plus one current update. A year later we paid $100 for lifetime maps.
At one point it was taking waaaay to long to boot, so I sent it back and got a new one. We have always had great luck w/ customer service, but I can see where you may not have the two weeks to wait it out.
I'm so sorry you got a POS, ssinca. MoPac is included in my traffic updates.
