Kathy & Others Who Ran a 5k or more
Any tips? I'm running my first 5k this coming Saturday!
Re: Kathy & Others Who Ran a 5k or more
I was just looking on FB yesterday to see if you'd posted when your 5k would be!
1. You CAN do this. It's not about winning. It's about finishing.
2. 5k isn't that long... from the time you're 15 minutes into it, you're already more than a third of the way there! It goes quickly, and it WILL end.
3. Don't pay attention to other people. This is YOUR run.
4. Have you run much outdoors? You should know by now how warm you get and when. For me, I had DH at the half way mark, and I gave him my top layer. I could have given it to him even at 1 mile, had he been there. Worst case, I would have thrown it in a bush and gotten it later.
5. If you're going to be in cold weather, maybe think about very light running gloves.
6. Load up on chapstick. My lips got dry.
7. If you're using an ipod, make an awesome playlist with strategically placed motivating songs to get your second and third winds.
7. HAVE FUN!!!
So excited for you!!
Do you like jewelry? Buy 2 get 4 half off, your half off items are your most expensive items

Also, and this is a given, stay hydrated! That's always my biggest challenge; I'll "forget" to drink on my runs.
Have fun!!

Awesome! My biggest advice is to pace yourself. Do you have a heart rate monitor? I used that to make sure my excitement in the beginning didn't make me bonk halfway through. Lots of people passed me in the beginning, while I was staying on pace with my heart rate, but halfway through I was the one passing people b/c I was keeping pace and could amp it up b/c I knew it would end soon and I had the energy for a final push. Don't pay attention to the people passing you in the beginning, but pay attention to passing people at the end! (it feels good!)
Good luck!!
Thanks girls, it makes me feel better about it! Kathy, I did the whole couch 2 5k training outside. Today was the first day I ran the full 5k, I did it 37:54 with four 30 second breaks after running 30 minutes straight. So in the actual 5k I might be able to shave two of them off and do it in less time.I figured since I ran 30 min straight in program that I wouldn't change that and take a break after if needed!
The 5k is in Niagara Falls, NY, so it's gonna be cold I'm sure!

I've ran a handful of 5ks and 5milers. My best piece of advice-carbo load the night before. The day of, just eat a light breakfast and hydrate. Oh and I still drink my coffee before hand. But thats just me.
Have an ipod of MP3 player with good tunes. Pace yourself. Run at a speed where you are just about to be out of breath. You don't want to run at the point where you are chest heaving. You should still be able to talk some-thats when you know you are at a comfortable pace (though I don't usually talk while running, even if DH is running the race with me).
And what I tell myself is to just keep going. I refuse to stop. In the grand scheme of things, the distance and time really isnt that much and I can totally make it through without a break (save the millisecond it takes to pick up a cup of water along the way). Again, thats just me. You know your body best, so listen to it.
