Name advice please!

On Weds we find out for sure if it's a girl.  I need your thoughts on our girls' name.  We want something that isn't very common but we don't want it so unique that it's weird and they'll get teased or not get taken seriously in life.

For a boy, Zachary Alan (both family names).

For a girl we like the name Jocelyn.  The problem is, my mom and sister don't love it and I can tell they're trying not to say much.  I think it's pretty and not very common, I can see a little girl and a grown woman with it.  I'm hesitant because of my mom and sis.

We're thinking Emily for a middle name but also kind of like it for a first (also a family name).

What are your honest opinions of Jocelyn?

Re: Name advice please!

  • I like the name but the spelling is a bit awkward to me. But I think that is what everyone is doing these days...taking names and giving them a unique spelling. I think it'd be a cute name for a girl though, I say if you love it, then go for it!
  • The weird thing is that Jocelyn is actually the 'normal' way of spelling it, at least from what I've seen in books and online.  I've seen Joslyn, Joslin, etc but then it's pronounced Joss-Lynn instead of Joss-a-lyn which is how we like it.  I kind of like the spelling Josselyn also.

  • Oh then I stand corrected! I do think it's a sweet name. I can just see a cute little Jocelyn with pigtails!
  • I think if you both love it you should go for it! Jocelyn and Zachary are both solid names. They'll grow well. You know your family will love the child no matter what their name is!
  • My trainer at my old gym was named Jocelyn. I loved her. She was my buddy. and it's a pretty name, GO FOR IT!

  • Thanks, ladies.  I guess I just want to make sure we're not naming her something we think is nice but others think is horrid.
  • I think it's a pretty name and if you love it you should use it.  I really like Emily too.

how the heck would you spell it? haha

I like the name - ultimately it is your child and if you love the name go for it. Much better than trying to please others with your decision, and there is absolutely nothing to dislike about the name for a child or adult.

  • NMS but it's not my baby ;-)

I also like Zoe...how cute would a Zoe AND a Zachary be! (If you had one of each down the road!)

  • Personally I'm not a fan, but that's not to say it's "horrid" either!! If you love it, go for it! If you don't or you're still kind of iffy, keep looking around for other names! You have time!

  • I love Jocelyn! We have a Jocelyn in our family, and that's how she spells her name.
  • I have known SO MANY Jocelyn's in my life.  It was apparently a really popular baby name in the very early 80's where I'm from.

They all spelled it Jocelyn, but pronounced it "Joss-lyn" not "Joss-a-lyn".  I'm not sure if that's just an accent thing where I'm from though (strong accents here, haha!)

When I did my Ed degree there was a Jocelyn in my program.  Everyone LOVED her.  She was gorgeous, and honestly - THE happiest person I've ever met in my life.  One of those girls who is just kind and generous and always has nice things to say about everyone, even if no one else does.  So now every time I hear the name I think of her, and I smile.

  • I like the name Jocelyn.  I wouldn't use it, but that's just me.  Would you use the name Jocelyn Emily?  It doesn't quite flow to me, but both names separately are beautiful!!

As usual, I agree with Stu! It's YOUR kid.... don't let anyone else influence your preference!

  • I think Jocelyn is a really pretty name!

I agree that "Jocelyn Emily" doesn't seem to flow very well, even though they're both lovely on their own. But that's just my two cents. Smile

This!  And what everyone else said.  You need to name her what YOU and HH want to name her.  She is your baby, not anyone else's!    Hope the US confirms Baby Girl!!!

And no matter what you name her, you will know that it is the PERFECT name for her!
