Overrated Twilight Series
Just a question: for those of you who say the twilight series is overrated... are you basing that on the books? The movies? or both?

I'm going to go ahead and own up to the fact that I'm a just a jerk - I haven't read the books or seen the movies. I just can't imagine anything being as good as people think this series is... ever.
I don't like to read, so the whole I-couldn't-put-the-book-down argument doesn't hold any water for me. I also can't understand waiting in line for a movie. Plus, from the previews and commercials I've seen, it looks incredibly stupid. Sure, I haven't seen it, but I have absolutely no desire to see it. So, for me, the fact that millions of people are obsessed over books/movies that I think looks ridiculous, makes me think it's overrated.
Flame away, if you wish, but that's my honest answer.
Not going to flame. The reason I ask is because most people I know who can't stand Twilight haven't actually read the books. I tend to agree that the movies are pretty bad. But I like the books, and I think the books are what matter because they came first.
(This is true also, by the way, of those I knew who hated Harry Potter back in the HP craze days. They hadn't actually read the books.. the just "hated" HP on principle.)
You are not missing anything Kelliejo. My sister made the same argument "you can't make fun of it unless you've actually read it." So I did, mostly so I could cite specific idiocies. I have also seen the movies (with said sister and after a few drinks) and rolled my eyes almost the whole time.
So I guess the answer is both. I really don't understand why girls moon over such flat characters they claim to be ideal boyfriends, but are really both buttheads. I can't get over the selfishness in every character in the story.
ETA: I did think the books were kind of a fun read--they were quick and fluffy. A good soapy escape from reality. I'm mostly upset about the "Team Edward" and "Team Jacob" nonsense that followed the movies.

I have read all the books, just before the Twilight movie came out,to see what all the fuss was about and I have to say that I felt brain damaged afterwards. I think Bella is an incrediably weak leading lady. She's whiny and pouty and irritating. By the time they *spoiler if anyone is interested* finally turn her I was ready to kill her myself. I also feel like Eclipse and Breaking Dawn were basically the same story with the exception of a few small elements. I guess it could be said that they did indeed invoke an emotion in me but that emotion is rage mostly.
I have seen the movies for Twilight and New Moon because they were on one of the movie channels. I didn't think they were bad movies but they were only as good as the material written for them.
dont wry, i felt the same way when I saw all the iphones or i-anything as overrated. Have these people used these things?? they are 1000x better than windows in my opinion, and as a graphic designer they are ideal.
anyway im getting off subject, i think the twilight books are pretty cool. I have only seen one of the movies tho. I do think the whole team jacob and edward are overrated, but u gotta look at who this is coming from- 10-15 yr old girls! of course they r gonna go crazy and voice their love for them. hormones are blazin!

I watched Dawson's Creek and loved every moment of it... but I was exactly the same age as they were, so it was easy to relate to. Plus, it wasn't as sci-fi/fantasy as vampires and wolves. I don't know, I think these shows are hard to compare to Twilight.
I completely disagree. Under the fantasy (not sci-fi) facade, the stories have the exact same elements that drive storylines in any one of these shows: unlikely romance, love triangles, jealousy, conflict that endangers the romance, etc. And often times, flawed characters are what make the story move. Did you know that Stefanie Meyers modeled her books after Jane Austen novels (Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, etc.)? The same riveting themes of those classic books are very present in the Twilight Series.
I'm not saying that makes the Twilight Series classic work by any means. (And like I said before, the movies are pretty bad.) But I will say that I got hours of enjoyment out of reading the books. To dismiss them as "silly teen nonsense" seems troubling to me because evidently, a LOT of people (not just teens) enjoy that "silly teen nonsense" (in the books, in the shows mentioned above, in classic literature, etc.).
I feel the opposite way as you, Karen- I like the movies, but didn't like the books. I felt like the books were very poorly written.
The first movie is still my favorite though. I don't like New Moon or Eclipse nearly as well as Twilight. Maybe that's because each movie has had a different director?? I'm definitely NOT one of those girls waiting in line at midnight for the new movie though. I think they're an indulgent fantasy, nothing more (and yes, I like to look at the man candy even though I feel kind of pervy since the actors are way younger
)
