Heeeeelp?

One of the children we are sponsoring through church has requested an MP3 player.  I know some of you may scoff at the thought of me buying him one...but he's 15, in foster care, and these will be the only gifts he's getting.  His list included an MP3 player, "In a Pickle" game, movies, a remote control helicopter and clothes/shoes.

Do any of you have any suggestions on the brand of MP3 player?  Movies appropriate for a 15 year old?  (I automatically think the Hangover and Superbad, so I'm terrible at this...yikes)

Also...what clothing brands are "cool" to 15 year olds?  I feel like I'm clueless...maybe some of you can help me based on his wish list?

A question about the girl we're sponsoring...she's 12.  On her clothing sizes, it states XXL in tops/pants/coat.  Does this mean XXL in juniors or womens?  12 is kind of an in between age, right?

I wish I could talk to these foster families and find out brands etc. that these kids like and fit them well.

Re: Heeeeelp?

  • For movies, my MIL (who has a 16 year old son) recommends Elf (apparently BIL and his friends love it).  I asked BIL for suggestions but MIL thought all of the movies he suggested weren't really appropriate. Lol.

I've heard good things about the Sansa Fuze as far as good mid-priced MP3 players go.

I'm not sure about the clothing brands.  I can tell you what BIL likes, but he is big into basketball, so it's pretty much all athletic wear.

I have never seen an XXL in Juniors.  I think there might be a small amount of XXL in girls (the equivalent of an 18).  DD, who is almost 11, wears a 14/16 in girls or a small in Juniors.  She is pretty tall for her age and fairly thin.  I'm not sure what a "normal" size for a 12 year old is.

I hope any of that helps!

  • As far as clothing brand... maybe American Eagle? H's brother is in high school and he's like AE for a long time. It's always easy to get him a giftcard.

I can't really help you with movies... Surely there have got to be some out there that aren't too childish yet aren't too inappropriate.

I can't help much with the MP3 player thing, either. I would just go to WalMart (or where ever you shop) and check out the brands and find one that looks cool.

  • I have no idea on any of that, but I wanted to say the first movies that came to mind for me were Hangover and Superbad too!

  • I would suggest Old Navy for the clothes for both of them. I feel their prices aren't too ridiculous and that way they can pick what they want. Or at least for the little girl cause I would have no clue what department to buy her clothes in. Movies and MP3 I have no clue either other than going to the electronic dept. at Target/Walmart and asking what they suggest. And good for you for thinking of others during this time! D and I wanted to do the angel tree thing that they usually do at Walmart (at least in Norman) but they don't do that out here and I am lost on how to do it!! :(

  • I have no clue on most of this, but I just wanted to add that you might try Aeropostale.  They have really good prices.   Like someone else said, sports wear is a good idea too (gym shorts, Nike t-shirts, etc.) Kohls has a good men's sportswear section.

  • I second Old Navy. The boy got 3 pairs of jean when he was here during Thanksgiving. Cheap and quality lol. And no flames here. I'm probably getting the boy an iPod touch for his gift.

  • Gah, I had a long message typed out and my computer crashed!

Clothing trends: plaid shirts, skinny jeans (even for boys), Converse sneakers, layered t-shirts (short over long), vintage or vintage-inspired clothes, especially sweaters. I'd hit up ON.

Movies: 17 Again, HP series, The Dark Knight, 10 Things I Hate About You, Speed Racer, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

  • Also, Transformers and maybe Monty Python and the Holy Grail (questionable but I would let my kid watch it; I watched it when I was a teenager).

  • Thanks for the responses, you all are very helpful!

  • Sorry no suggestions for a MP3 player but I would recommend looking at Old Navy for clothes. I think the 12 year old might be a XXL in girls. I know Old Navy does go up to that size in girls clothes.

On movies for the 15 year old I think Scott Pilgrim vs. the world would be great. I've been looking at my younger cousins' FB trying to figure out what they like (gah, I feel old!). Most of them like Ricky Bobby, Scott Pilgrim, Transformers, Harry Potter, and Superbad.

I found this on Old Navy's webiste for sizing:

  • I really like some of the movie suggestions (esp. The Dark Knight, and you could maybe also grab Batman Begins). Star Trek was another good one recently.

Yes  Absolutely. You could also introduce the kiddo to some older, but still awesome movies from the 80s-90s as well.
