Cleaning extremely dirty carpet?
One of my friends just moved into a place that has nasty carpet and came to me for help on how to get it clean. It smells horrible and looks like the previous person had animals that used the bathroom all over it. She doesn't want to get new carpet until her new puppy is potty trained. What products can be used to get the carpet clean? Would an enzyme cleaner be a good addition? She's going to rent a RugDoctor from the store.
Re: Cleaning extremely dirty carpet?
Our front room is old carpet. The previous renter's animals did a number on it. Our cats found that smell fascinating and have continued the tradition.
I used a full gallon of NAture's Miracle Enzyme cleaner. Still smelled.
I rented a rug doctor. I went over the room 1x with water, 1x with the detergent, 3x with water. The water was still coming out almost black.
The room actually smelled WORSE than before. I think because the rug doctor got it all wet and reactivated it.
The smell got back to previous levels about 2 weeks later.
Finally we had Stanley Steemer come out (just this past Thursday) and did the clean, deoderize and protect. It smells a LOT better, but the cat still crapped on it once already. And our cats never had a litter box problem before we moved into this house, so I think they can still smell something. But for humans it's a pretty good improvement.
On the Nature's Miracle, is it a spray or something that you add to the carpet cleaner? All I can find is the small spray bottle and I don't even want to imagine how much she'd have to pay to cover the whole house!
i sprayed it but i bought it in a jug. Maybe it would have worked better in the rug doctor. It was $27 for the gallon at Petco.
Rug Doctor sells a enzyme cleaning product that goes with their machine specifically for people with animals . You can find it next to the Rug Doctors. We've used it before to clean our place and it always freshens things up. However, we just have regular wear and tear from a us and a dog. No big stains or stinky spots here.
Nature's Mircale is very good for spot treating. Put it on the spot and be sure to completely soak the area. Let it dry and the smell is gone.
If she has a puppy, I'd have her skip renting a rug doctor and just buy herself a carpet shampooer. She's going to need it! Ours has saved our carpet with two (finally potty trained) puppies. Plus, it's just nice to be able to shampoo your carpets when you notice them getting dirty. And even after the puppy is potty trained, if he/she ever gets sick, he/she still may go on the carpets/vomit.
I've found that I could shampoo urine spots immediately after one of the dogs had an accident, but that there would still be a stain/slight odor if I just went over it with the shampooer. I figured out that using the hand-held attachment and really scrubbing the crap out of the spots, even if they were older, helped tremendously. No more stains or smells!
I've also sprayed OxyClean onto pet stains before, and that worked as well. Better than the enzyme killer on old spots.
