Okay spill your money-saving grocery shopping secrets! DH and I spent a small fortune this weekend on Christmas stuff and going to a football game so we are trying to be extra frugal with our groceries this week. Cheap but still healthy recipes would be specifically appreciated, kthanks!

Re: :: Lisa ::

  • LOL I'd be happy to share my money-saving grocery shopping secrets!

    I always buy my groceries on sale and tend to work around what kinds of meat I buy or have frozen from previous trips. Usually the value-pack is the way to go. I had made a notebook where I jotted prices down and monitored it each week for a few months to see what the rock-bottom sale was, and then know what an "acceptable" price to pay would be. Your prices will vary compared to what my prices are b/c of geography, but usually the cheapest types of meats are bone in chicken, whole chickens, some kinds of roasts obviously anything BOGO, or less than $3/lb I consider a good deal.

    I made teriyaki chicken thighs last Friday with rice and green beans which were really good! http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ellie-krieger/teriyaki-chicken-thighs-recipe/index.html I used the bone-in chicken thighs with the skin removed and also the little fat pocket found underneath the thigh. You could use chicken breasts for this too I'm sure, I just don't know what the timing difference is. I highly recommend an instant-read thermometer and get it to 160-5 degrees.

    I'll think of some more ideas-I should post some on our food blog! I have been a horrible blogger on my own and our recipes blog so I will try to add some more ideas and let you know when I've updated some.

    Rachel, if you have a Sam's club or Costco membership they are awesome.  I buy most of our meat from Sam's club since it's cheaper there.  I can get a 10lb bag of boneless skinless chicken breast for under $15 and it's usually around $8 for a 3lb bag in the groccery store.

    Also, get the Sunday paper and use the coupons. I think 1 week I saved almost $10 just with coupons.

  • I would give myself a B+ for food saving generally. We go to Costco and freeze meats and all that good stuff. Unfortunately we are kind of huge foodies and therefore also find ourselves leaning towards recipes with lots of ingredients/fancy/expensive ingredients.

    I'm looking for a quick fix this week so I can spend like $50 on groceries for the whole week - that recipe looks good Lisa :) Think I'm gonna sneak on over to food network and look up some of their $10 dinners.

  • Wholesale clubs can be good, however you have to look at the packages carefully- chicken breast for example, boneless skinless often has two kinds- "regular" and "99% fat free" which obviously the latter is more expensive. I find these usually at the clubs, slightly more expensive than the good grocery store sales. So make sure you are comparing apples to apples when shopping these items.

    $10 dinners is a great place to look, also Sandra's Money Saving Meals is another good resource.

    I am also a foodie nut so I do the same as you using lots of ingredients and not always the cheapest ones. What I would suggest is to say you'll do 2 or 3 meals a week of "foodie recipes" and make sure those recipes share some of the same ingredients! That'll get you the foodie fix but not kill your budget.
