Vacuum recommendations

DH and I desperately need a new vacuum before baby comes and I really want the Dyson Animal vacuum (http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Dyson-DC25-Animal-Vacuum-Refurbished/4233160/product.html) but I'm not sure how we could fit it into our budget. Do any of you have a vacuum that you love and would recommend. I have about a 600sq ft apartment will almost all carpet except for the small kitchen and the bathroom. I have 2 cats that shed like crazy all year round so I'm going to need something that will pick up cat hair well. Thanks ladies.

Re: Vacuum recommendations

  • We have this one..

Bought it at Costco for maybe $150?  It says it is no longer available, though.  Maybe check out the other Bissell products.  I know girls on here recommend the Eraser one.

  • I have the Dyson Animal, and I HIGHLY recommend it.  We have a black lab that sheds constantly, 3 cats, and 3 long-haired women in the house, and it does wonders.  It works better than any vacuum I have ever owned - well worth the price.  I looked at it this way: I had spent at least the same amount on 2 or 3 cheaper vacuums that didn't work - I wish I had bought the Dyson years earlier.  No bags, you can wash the filter yourself, and it works great.  The only downside is that I have to cut the human hair off the roller every month or so, as it gets wrapped up.  But that is true with all vacuums.

    Agreed! including the hair comment.

We have 3 shedding machines at our house, and then 2 cats on top of that. The Dyson Animal was the best thing we ever spent money on. Maybe you could ask for some gift cards to Bed Bath and Beyond or Macys to help defer some of the cost for Christmas. Also, if you can find the DC17 somewhere (the older model) it would be much cheaper. I did a quick search on google shopping, and it is still available, for about $280. Still not terribly cheap, but nothing like the almost $500 price tag of the newest model.

  • I'm a huge Dyson fan. I also have the Animal. I was sick of crappy vacuums and DH always commenting on how the floors still felt dirty after I vacuumed. So I quit vacuuming and told him I wasn't doing it again until he got me a decent vacuum. ( I wasn't even going for Dyson at that point.) Definitely worth the price.

  • Another vote for Dyson!  I cannot tell you how many vacuums my parents have wasted money on (plus multiple expensive repair costs.)  My mother finally sucked it up and ordered a Dyson last week.  I LOVE ours, well worth the money.
  • I have just a standard Oreck...  I love that it's lightweight, doesn't have a lot of unnecessary bells and whistles, and it doesn't take up a ton of space... It also picks up all of Fenway's hair!  You can buy them refurbished at the Oreck store for less than $200 most of the time, and they come with a guarantee!

  • I have the DC17 Dyson Animal. Best money I ever spent. I went with the older model to save money. DH vacuums every day. It is amazing how much hair that sucker picks up. My dog is a long haired mix and we would always find hairballs rolling across the hardwood. I call them tumbleweeds.

My mom just bought the Bissell Pet (not sure the exact name). She said it picks up a lot of hair and is happy with it.
