Questions!

I tell you, it's been killing me keeping this a secret for so long!  From here and everywhere (well, my department and our moms and my grandmother have known for more than a month)...  And too, I have no close IRL friends that have children besides a few that have children that are nearly out of high school!

I have my first ultrasound Tuesday morning...how long should I expect this to take?

I to do the one hour glucose test...no questions about that, just kind of frustrating I need to do this already, but kinda necessary given my family history.

Clothes...recommend some places!  I really have no desire to spend a fortune, but I am incomfortable in most of my regular clothes already (and a little irritated that I had two mini shopping sprees shortly after starting my job)!  I ordered a few things off of Old Navy the other night...what I really want is comfy pants for work and a few good pairs of jeans.  Recommendations?

I'm lucky in that my mom cleans for rather wealthy people and one of the couples she cleans for, the wife is somewhat younger (early 40s), and has a toddler.  She's going to get out her maternity clothes for me next week in hoping I can get some stuff out of there.  She's normally about my size and she is an attorney, so hoping for some decent pieces.

Re: Questions!

  • Yeah!! Congrats!!  I had good luck w/ JCP online. I would order and try on and return what didn't fit and keep what I liked. I had trouble in stores though because I am tall so I didn't have many other choices.  Ultra sound is quick.. You'll spend more time in the waiting room then anywhere around the doctors or nurses!

  • I'm assuming you are going for the 12 week NT scan, if so, mine took maybe 10-15minutes.  They are checking for things and have to get proper measurements and the baby has be in the right position too so it may take longer, may be shorter, it all depends.

I had the 1 hr glucose test when they normally do it, 28 weeks, I think.  I can't even remember actually, haha.  Not bad at all.  So don't worry about it.

As far as clothes I had no luck at JCP, I found the selection small and to be honest kinda frumpy.  Old Navy, I had no luck in store, the section was so small.  I didn't order online because Old Navy fits oddly on me and I didn't want to have to ship it back.  I did order quite a bit from Ann Taylor Loft maternity online, always loved everything I got, always fit well.  I also had the best luck at Mimi Maternity.  Now called Pea in a Pod.  The front part of the store is pricey, I did have some things from the front of the store, my jeans because I'm picky and a few tops that I managed to get on sale.  The back of the store is easier on the wallet, more Old Navy pricing and I got a lot of  nice stuff there too.  Also keep in mind that the bigger, flowy style is very in right now so I had a lot of non-maternity stuff that I could wear during my pregnancy.  At the end, I was so big, I shopped in my husbands closet!!   I also love tight fitting pregnancy clothes!!  It is the only time in your life you can rock a beer gut and feel good about it :o)  Target has a small section, but quite fashinable, reasonably priced and sometimes they have super clearance on it too.

Also, whatever you do please don't take any used car seats from anyone.  I'm a car seat safety freak and being the business your husband is in, he might be too :o)  hehe  I just feel very strongly about car seats and car seat safety.

I second that.  The first one was just about five-ten minutes.  This last one was about forty minutes.

As for clothes, I had luck at Clothes Mentor one time, but not the next.  I liked Pea in a Pod/Motherhood Maternity, but Pea in a Pod is expensive.  If you are going to have any events to go to, Motherhood Maternity had a really cute dress for $30 that I used this fall for the four weddings we had in five weekends...  I had the best luck at Old Navy (on Airport, I haven't been to the one at the mall) though.  I know last year I went with one of my best friends and we couldn't find anything.  I went with my MIL a few weeks ago, and I found three pairs of pants and seven shirts.  Gap Maternity is nice too, but they are more expensive.  I haven't had a ton of luck at Kohl's, and I was able to find a pair of jeans at JCPenney, but that is about it there.  Good luck finding stuff!

  • Jill - don't worry - they actually tried to talk DH into the whole certification thing to inspect carseats and get them all set up and everything given he's in Community Affairs, however, he turned that down because of the time commitment it would have ended up being!  And too, I have a hard time with anything used!  Clothes I'll give a whirl, but a lot of other stuff...no thank you!

I looked at Target (in Perrysburg) a few weeks ago, but glanced at the section and said eff that...it was seriously a hot mess and I'm not one to pick through things like that!  I don't know if the one on Monroe St. may be any better?  I'm kinda excited that yes...I will have a reason to rock that 'beer gut' for a little while!

I did turn down all the recommended genetic testing (you know...my advanced maternal age and all)...but yes, this is the 12 week.

  • I never did the NT scan if that's what you have, I had a dating ultrasound in the first tri and it was maybe 15 minutes long. The 20 week anatomy scan is the one that takes a long time.

I'm suffering through GD for the second time, I've taken the 1 hr, 2hr and 3 hr, not fun.

As for clothes, Motherhood is the cheapest, but the quality isn't good. Old Navy is fairly inexpensive and pretty decent quality, but I hate their jeans/pants, they stretch out and don't fit right after wearing them once, Stay away from jeans that are sized M, L, XL etc, go for ones that are sized 10, 12, 14, etc. I love Gap maternity jeans/pants, totally worth the money, especially if you can find them on sale. You could also try getting a belly band to wear with your work pants.

  • I would spend money on a good pair of maternity jeans, you will not regret it.  I spent $100 on mine but after trying on pair after pair of $30 jeans that looked like a hot mess, I caved.  Actually my mom bought the $100 pair for me for my b-day. They came from Pea in a Pod. I wore them all the time, they fit well, felt good, never fell down (you will know what I mean when I say fall down once your belly gets bigger) Anyways, they were worth every single cent.  I forgot about Gap Maternity, the only Gap that sells it is the one at Fallen Timbers.  I did buy one thing there, sweats, ha!  I didn't care for the fit of their jeans.

Invest in an Ingrid & Isabel band, they are in my opinion the best.  I had two, one black and one nude.  I bought them on Ebay cheap.  Just check their official website for sizing information before you buy one.  They help a lot, in the beginning to hold up pants they you wear unbuttoned and at the end when your so big your belly pushes everything down, they help hold the pants up.

I only did the 12 week NT scan.  I opted out of the blood test they do around 16 weeks because it is known to produce false positives.  The 20 week u/s took way, way longer than the 12 week one.  They spend a lot of time doing that, it was at least 40 minutes long, maybe longer.

  • I have had some luck at Kohls this time around.  In fact there are some summer clearance things still there for a steal (shorts, capris, t-shirts).  Their tops have been very kind to me this pregnancy so far. I got a very comfy pair of velour sweats there last weekend.

Pants have been a struggle for me.  I did JCP and Motherhood last go round but was wearing 1x-2x.  I am swimming in those sizes now (yeah!) but have found that I'm growing out of Large pants and some XLs fit my butt, some fall off, and some make me look like sausage.  I basically have 4 pairs of pants and circulate through them during the work week.

I wore a ton of dresses last time too.  I was always hot with Alex even though I'm PG the same time of year now basically.  I just would get the stretchy empire-waist ones and wear leggings under them.  This time I'm all about pants.  I do have a nice pair of the faux Spanx tights from Target and they fit really well.

IMO, tank tops are a must.  I have a small army of them b/c I find I need to layer so much b/c the "girls" grew and many maternity tops are v-necks.   I like loose ones, but also like the tighter ones with stretchy spandex to help support my belly and pants.

  • I like Pea in a Pod for maternity clothes, they have the best variety and selection of stuff that you can actually try on. Kohls was good for casual shirts and undershirt type stuff.

As far as the u/s goes... like others have said I would expect 15 minutes or so. And I didn't think the glucose test was all that bad. The stuff kinda tasts like flat orange soda but a little sweeter.

  • With A I had to dress up for work so I went to Motherhood Maternity & Kohls for work clothes. Old Navy for casual stuff.

With A2 I bought all my clothes at Clothes Mentor in Perrysburg.

  • I would definitely try Clothes Mentor in Pburg... I hated spending a ton of money on clothes that wouldn't fit me for long...
  • Kohls was the best!  Most times, I ordered online with a 20 or 30% discount and free shipping and then what didn't work/fit went back to the store.  ON - I have a couple pair of cotton pants from there that I loved, but they do run big, a couple of long sleeve shirts for pjs or around the house and my winter coat and it was great!  If you do order a coat, go a size bigger.  I was due in January, so my regular winter coat was too tight.  I had to stay way from their v-necks because the girls would just fall right out (they dip too far down).
