Do you prefer a democratic 'supermajority', or do you prefer the republicans to have some sort of say, somewhere, somehow? ?And, if the latter...what sorta say, and how so?
Re: Question for Lefties
OMG I'm glad you said it first since I was thinking the same thing!
To answer OP, I am not a true "Leftie" but I do think a balance will be nice.
ETA: In regards as to what type of "say," it would be great to see a Republican or two appointed as cabinet member(s). I think that sort of close influence will provide a more balanced team of advisors for the new President, which I think is rare. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
Generally, I prefer some form of divided government, probably with enough Republicans to filibuster in the Senate or to keep from being able to override a veto.
But for the next 2 years, I wouldn't mind at least a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. This is solely because of the Supreme Court. In order to keep the current balance, Stevens and Ginsberg (assuming she retires soon) would need to be replaced with fairly liberal justices. I worry that a Republican filibuster would force the appointment of more moderate justices, which would effectively shift the Court right.
Ha, well you left-handed folks deserve a question too! ?
?Said lefties, do you take pride that both candidates are left handed? ?Would you admit it if you did? ?You have Cobain, Hendrix, Obama and McCain. ?Feeling superior yet?? ?;)?
ditto mer!!!
I am for balance (I'm a Libra too, lol) so I feel that right now we need more from the left. Having a "supermajority" - while it might make more progress accomplished in the short run - is gonna cause that many more problems as time goes on. So I believe in diversity in general - just that right now is the time for more of a liberal sway.
But then again I am an independant.
Ha, well I didn't know that. Saweet! Yes, I do take pride in being a leftie. I used to be ambidextrous (sp?) when I was younger but lost that talent.
No, I love a supermajority. I'd like to know what that feels like. Again, here's my analogy:
Democrats are like chocolate to me. Mmm, yum. I love chocolate. Now if the Republicans were like peanut butter or even marshmallow, I might be in. They compliment each other, make each other more delicious, etc. But right now, elected Republicans (not our nice ladies on this board or even most people who are Republicans) are poop. Please don't put poop in my chocolate.
Thanks, I'm a 12-year-old boy. But that's my feeling right now.
I'm worried about the backlash if there's a supermajority.
I would like a supermajority if I thought the Dems could behave themselves. I think they'd go nuts if they were unsupervised, so like gtown, I'd worry about a backlash.
I don't think it will happen though. I bet Lieberman will become a Republican if it does, which may make it all go away.
I honestly think Obama will veto anything too outrageous, so the supermajority is OK with me.
I prefer it because things will get done. Right now, our government is in a stalemate and you can see how unpopular that is. I also think that if it happens (which I doubt it really will), that does give moderate to left judges an opportunity to retire safely, if they so choose.
