Kindle crisis

Now that Google is starting their own ebook store with yet another format that can't be used on a kindle, do you think that ereader is subpar?

Fukc, why is Amazon such a dickcheese?  I expect this from Apple, but not Amazon.

Re: Kindle crisis

  • I don't know why anyone would need more than the Amazon library.  I mean they have everything, cheaper or at comparable prices.

  • I don't have any issue with Amazons current selection or prices, but I just don't like being told that I have to shop at one store and one store only.  I like having the option to choose my retailer.

And just because Amazon has a great selection and pricing strategy today, doesn't mean that that will be true six months from now.  If I didn't already have my kindle, I think this might influence my purchasing decision.

Of course, you can always buy books elsewhere, strip the drm, and change the format to be readable on your kindle, but that seems like a lot of effort for a legitimately purchased book.

  • Until the launch of the Google bookstore, the whole "but you can only buy Kindle content from Amazon" criticism was a huge crock-of-bullshit because there were only two main sources for content anyway, B&N and Amazon. Yes Borders and Sony have stores and you can put their books on your Nook, or your Kobo, or you Sony Reader, but neither Borders nor Sony have great content. And many of the smaller/indie publishers are selling DRM free content that you could read on any ereader because you could convert it to a format that would work for you without any problems. I buy books from Indie publishers for my Kindle regularly.

Now that Google has opened a bookstore I think a lot of people are wondering if Kindle is the new Betamax and I think that depends on a couple of things.

    1. Content, how much does Google really have? and how much of it is stuff people will read and buy (ie popular fiction, popular author backlists)? It's too early to know right now. But in category romance a popular author is Susan Napier, and although the prices were better at Google, Amazon had 8 of her books compared to Google's 4.

    2. How do people want to buy their books? I like with my Kindle I turn on the wireless and the book shows up whether I have bought it from Amazon or from someplace else and emailed it to myself. If you buy a book from Google and want to put it on your Nook, Kobo, or Sony you have to sideload it from a computer using Adobe Digital Editions. I'll go for convenience every time.

On a side note stripping DRM isn't hard so I don't worry about losing my books bought from Amazon if they suddenly go out of business or if I want to switch e-reader brands. And I haven't found a book for sale from an ebook store yet that I couldn't get to work on my Kindle with a minimum of fuss.

Finally, Amazon is in the business of selling books and making money. I honestly believe if they find that not supporting DRMed EPUBs will hurt their business, they'll update the software and we'll be able to sideload through Adobe Digital Editions.

So I stand by my original assertion that unless you have a public library with an amazing selection of ebooks you want to read the Kindle is the best ereader in terms of use, cost of device, cost of content, and content selection.

  • Thanks!  I guess I assumed Google would have a crazy big selection that would dwarf Amazon; I know Amazon is big on books and all, but Google is big on ...being big.

I also wasn't sure how easy or hard the DRM removal would be.  In my experience, things that sound simple are often a PITA and things that sound complicated I can do in 30 seconds.

So if I do remove DRMs, the FBI and Metallica and whoever the literary copyright champion will be one day aren't going to come to my house and arrest me, right?

  • I will say a lot of publishers hate amazon because of amazon undercutting the prices of new releases and best sellers on the Kindle. but google is meeting or beating amazon prices so I don't think the publishers are in any hurry to jump under the covers with google either.
