Need Gift Advice

My Dad and his wife are impossible to buy for.  They live really far away from us, so we usually only see them once every year or so.  They don't have any "hobbies," so all of the typical dad gifts are out - golf stuff, hunting stuff, etc... none of that.  He works in a really casual office, so no ties or anything office-y.

My only thought right now is a gift card to a restaurant, which is lame and impersonal.  Anyone else have any better ideas?

  • I also like experiential gifts, like movie passes or tickets to a local jazz show or a wine tasting event or something else like that. It's not too pricey and more meaningful than just some "stuff" you scrambled to buy them. Ya know?

  • Actually, I think that Gift Certificates to a restaurant are a lovely gift.  My husband and I enjoy dining out but don't get to do it often because of our budget.  I get excited when someone does something like that for us because it is something we cut out of our spending allotment when I decided it was time to quit my part time "fun money" job.

This.  My parents love going out to eat.  I usually always give them certificates because it's what they like.

  • This is the only time you're going to get this out of a vegetarian: would they like a "meat of the month" kind of thing?  That way you're giving them something useful and different than the standard restaurant gift card.
