I learned something interesting today (delivery related)

I was talking to the office staff at the OB office today about c-section dates, and they told me that St. Lukes and the other hospitals in the area are looking to change their policy from allowing c-sections at 39 weeks to not allowing them until 40 weeks, which goes along with their new policies that no longer allow inductions before 40 weeks unless medically necessary. Just thought that was interesting, it doesn't affect me this pregnancy, but might if we have a 3rd because I would have to have a repeat c-section.

Re: I learned something interesting today (delivery related)

  • Always thought a baby was considered "full-term" as long as they were carried to 38 weeks.  (At least that's how it was 10 years ago.  lol!) I've been out of the loop for a while.

I've never understood any induction if it wasn't medically necessary...so that part makes sense to me, but a large part of scheduled C-sections is to be able to go in and take the baby prior to the mother going into labor which could then cause complications. So banning the C-sections prior to 40 weeks is only increasing the chances of moms going into labor and having more complications.

On the flip side, I heard briefly on the news some talk about the staggering numbers of C-sections performed in our country and supposedly there's some huge movement about why doctors are scheduling so many, and are they really as necessary as they're being made out to be...or are docs jsut reimbursed a lot more for surgery, etc.  I didn't hear the whole thing, though, so I don't know what the outcome was on that.

  • That is interesting.  I've heard of this though in other hospitals.

Obviously they'd have to allow for medically necessary inductions and c-sections.

I think this is a good thing though.  I think many failed inductions that lead to c-sections are caused because inductions are done before a mom is ready.  I'm a firm believer that unless medically necessary, wait it out.

Example: good friend of mine had her baby 2 years ago, she lives near Cleveland, her doctor automatically schedules all his patients for inductions the day after whatever their expected due date is.  Just like that because according to him, things become very bad for the baby if you do not have him or her on or before their due date.  Can we say whacko???  Sadly she believes every word of that BS.  She ended up having a c-section because obviously her body just wasn't ready yet, it was her first kid.

I really think a lot of OBs have become induction happy out of convinience and many mis-informed moms go for it, not realizing what they are getting themselves into.  I think especially with first time moms they get wrapped up in the excitement of meeting their first baby and go for it without really weighing the consequences of what they are doing.

Not that I care if people choose inductions or whatever, I just think it is too bad that sometimes they lead to surgeries that may not have been necessary if the OB and/or mom could have just waited a few more days for their bodies to do what they are meant to do.

  • This reminds me a little of the film/documentary "Business of Being Born".

My OB practice changed their c/s policies within the last 4 yrs.  My friend goes there and they let her have a c/s with #1 b/c at 38 wks. b/c she was "miserable".  She had #2 (a repeat c/s---a VBAC wasn't discussed I think) last December and they made her wait until 40 weeks.  She was due Christmas Day, but b/c of the holiday they let her deliver the 23rd.

Also, my hospital changed baby policies right after DS was born.  He was born in December and spent a lot of time in the nursery and DH didn't accompany him to his first bath, etc.  My friend delivered 3 wks. later after the first of the year and they had changed their policies that the baby stays with mom and dad nearly 100% of the time while admitted unless there is an issue.

This is how Findlay hospital is. Ella didn't even leave the room for her first bath. They didn't take her til the middle of the night the second night for her testing and stuff.

This is how Flower was.  They don't even have a "nursery".  You can take your baby in the hopper down to the nurses station if you want so you can rest and they will bring the baby back for feedings if you are breastfeeding, if not they will give formula down there.  We did 50/50.  I sent Davis down to the nursery at night, had them give him formula, went and got him in the a.m.  But that was my choice.  We could have had him there the entire time.  They did the first bath right in our room, Jeff helped, I watched since I was still numb.  I truly enjoyed my entire experience at Flower.  It was great.  I loved being in the same birthing suite the entire time, labor, delivery and recovery.

I liked that too except that the bed was awful. I did not get good sleep the entire time that I was there because of the 2 piece bed. The bed did not lay flat, so I was sliding down the whole time. I complained about the awful bed to every nurse I saw and to my OB when I went in for my followup appointment. Apparently they used to have matress pad type things that they would put on after delivery that made the bed softer and a little more level but the last shipment they got in of them smelled like urine so they quit using them.

  • Jill, flower does have a nursery but it's really only used for circumcisions :o)

Bethany, why would you HAVE to have a repeat c/s?? It should depend on scarring and the type of incision you have.

I don't think my OB does VBACs, either that or they don't like to do them, they said next one would be a repeat c-section.

Our OB/Hospital doesn't allow VBACs either.

So strange. I had a choice. The risks/safety is the same as a c/s.

I know. They used too for a short while and then for insurance reasons they don't.

  • My OB/hospital doesn't allow VBACs either. I wonder if it's because it's a smaller hospital. I honestly have no desire for a VBAC though so it doesn't bother me.
