XC Skiing GTG this weekend?

Hey girls, is anyone interested in getting together this weekend to go cross country skiing? Saturday or Sunday would work for me. I would be willing to go anywhere along the Lakeshore--Pigeon Creek, Riley Trails, Hoffmaster (more challenging), or the state park in North Muskegon. I know a couple of sources for rentals, too, if anyone needs those.

Re: XC Skiing GTG this weekend?

  • That sounds so much fun!  However, I have no idea how to cross country ski.  Sad

    Have fun!

  • It really isn't hard. I used to do it as a kid, but hadn't gone in over 15 years and only went three times last year. I am by no means an expert skier. Pigeon Creek or the state park in Muskegon are very easy places to learn (very flat terrain, groomed trails) if you really do want to go.

I don't know now to cross country ski either.  If I didn't have plans both Saturday and Sunday, I would totally be up for trying it.   Maybe next weekend?

I know how to downhill ski.  Would that be a help or a hindrance in learning cross country?

Any idea how much rentals cost?

I might be up for it, if you promise it's not that hard to pick up.  It'd be better if there were another newbie going too, so that I'm not the only one slowing everyone down.  Smile

  • I think downhill skiing is a help. The xc skis will feel long and awkward at first, but I think from downhill, you have more confidence and balance than someone who has never skied. I just called Pigeon Creek and they are not yet grooming trails or offering rentals. Breakaway bikes in Grand Haven charges $15 for a Saturday pickup with Monday return. The state park in Muskegon charges somewhere around $12 for a one day trail pass with rental.
  • What time?  How long does it take?

This weekend isn't good for me (company Holiday party Friday night, and we're hosting a big Ugly Sweater party on Saturday, and then Sunday is dedicated to rest/clean up.)  Busy weekend.

I'm definitely in if you go again another time this season.

I did it once.  It wasn't too hard to pick up.  But I fell and sprained my ankle while standing around waiting for people to catch up.  Yes, I was just standing there - I'm talented.

So, I suck and will be slow but I want to try it again.  :)  aka you'll be better than me.   :)

  • I have no plans this weekend, so whenever works is fine with me if anyone ends up interested. Next weekend, I know I'm busy all day Saturday and might be busy most of Sunday as well. But there is a chance I would be available on Sunday afternoon.

If you have no plans and you and L are bored, you can come to our ugly sweater party.  It's going to be super klassy with beer pong, card games, Guitar Hero, Wii games and lots of drinking (not by me though - I'm a quitter.)  Stick out tongue

  • I have no plans because L has lots of plans. He will be playing WoW all weekend. Rolls eyes, makes sad face... So I would have to attend your party solo. also, one of my CWs is having a birthday gtg that night and I should probably go to that. Thanks for the invite, though!
  • I havent done it since high school but I would be willing to give it a try this season sometime

  • Grrr, that sounds like fun but this weekend is out for me. :-(

Kasa - I only downhill skied before I tried XC about 3 years ago.  It is VERY easy to pick up.  Especially if you go to a fairly flat place with some good tracks out there.  I would put money on it that you'd pick it up in no time. :-)

  • My sister is coming in from Florida this weekend and we're headed to Ann Arbor for the big hockey game otherwise I'd totally be in. I've been itching to get my skis out! Definitely another weekend though. Yes
  • Well, it looks like this weekend might be a bust for everyone. Also, L told me yesterday that he wants to run some errands in GR on Saturday. So, it looks like Sunday would be the day. I also might have overestimated how much snow was down there. I'll call a couple of places tomorrow and see what the snow is like. Kasa and Charity, are you still considering Sunday or should we try for another weekend?

I'd be willing to wait until another time that works better for everyone else.

I could probably do Sunday afternoon.

  • Molly, I will send you a FB message by Saturday if conditions are good at the winter sports complex in N Muskegon. I think that is super close to your house and they do on-site rentals there. Will that work?
