So, I'm new to this whole winter thing...
but it can't be normal to have this much snow so early! Right, right? We live in Central/Upstate New York and this week alone the low for each night is around 9!! NINE! Before Thursday evening we're supposed to get 12-15'' of snow. For a Texas girl, that's a lotta snow! Silly question but, where does it all go? Do people just not go to work or school or outside for that matter?
I think I might freeze before the weekend is up...lol

Re: So, I'm new to this whole winter thing...
This post made me "awwwww".
Although I'm not in central or upstate NY, I can answer your questions from a midwestern perspective! Yes, it is normal to have snow this early. We had our first snowfall this past weekend, and I think that's obscenely late - usually it's snowing in mid-November.
And as for where all the snow goes - it'll get plowed to the sides of the road and shoveled onto the grass. A large amount of it will melt the next time the sun comes out, but the remaining will either a) somehow stick around ALL WINTER, turning gray and eventually black, b) melt, but not completely forming ice chunks, or c) a lovely combination of both. We definitely still go to work and school, regardless of how much snow there is. I mean, if we got three feet overnight or something I might call in sick...but otherwise, I'm there!
Ladies from other cold parts of the country - am I missing anything?

haha, i guess i never thought about such a question since i'm so used to it.
just wait-the best part will be the parking lots that plow it in to piles all winter long. in the spring those piles will still be there, even when the grass is showing and it's not super cold out anymore. they will be lovely piles of black colored ice, rocks & dirt.
my favorite is driving up north towards erie in may. the highway takes you right past the edinboro walmart and those piles are sky high and not going anywhere until june sometime. nothing like having shorts on and still looking at ice piles!
and yes, school & work still happen. unless it gets REALLY bad (like our snowpocolypse last year when everyone was literally snowed in for 3 days straight).
I'm in Western New York, so it's about the same as here and... yes, totally normal. We've had snow for a week straight, nothing too heavy, but it accumulates. Get yourself some boots (not fashion boots) that grip the ground for you and a good, insulated coat. A snow brush/ice scraper combo is a necessity for your car and a blanket or two if you're going to do highway driving. The I-90 here always get hits bad because it's directly on the lake effect path.
Take it slow when you drive in bad weather. See if maybe there is a winter defensive driving course in your area. Or read this: http://www.weather.com/activities/driving/drivingsafety/drivingsafetytips/snow.html
The others covered it pretty well, it's plowed into giant piles and sits there through April. It will look like a pile of dirt in the spring, but it's actually dirty, dirty snow.
When I was in school they used to say they wouldn't cancel unless the snow was up to the bedroom window of the school's superintendent... which was on the second floor. That seems about accurate, haha.

This post just made me smile. I love it.
Invest in some good winter gear like boots, hats, gloves, heavy pjs and blankets, if you haven't already. I gave up on trying to be fashionable in the winter a loooong time ago.
Like the ladies have said, town or city departments take care of plowing the roads, but you'll want to have a good shovel if you have your own driveway, and there are good ones to keep in your car in case you have to park on the street and shovel yourself out, or if it snows when you're at work.
As for work and school, I'm in Southern CT and they call delays all the time, even if it's just forecasted. It kind of annoys me because we used to go to school in blizzards up in MA and maybe get an early release day. However, gauge your commute to work. I typically have an hour or so commute, and in snowy weather, that can easily become 2-3 hours. I have the ability to work from home if completely necessary, but most days we're expected to come in and they'll determine if we should go home early if it's really, really bad. Also, check with you work if there's a number to call to get notifications for delays and such. My office has an extension that we dial into and they record a message early in the morning if they decide to open the office later or keep it closed for the day.
I'm not sure what kind of car you have, but you might want to think about snow tires, and definitely be very careful driving. The roads can get very slick with black ice, which is very smooth ice that forms on the roads and is very dangerous because you can't necessarily see it. Not to worry you, but it is there. Drive extremely cautiously.
Yay winter!

Thanks for the suggestions y'all! This morning when I woke up I couldn't see out my window and FREAKED. Turns out the wind just blew all the snow right up to the building. lol.
