How was 2010 for you?

1. See here: http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/28857175.aspx

2. How did your year compare to what you said at the beginning of the year? Did you get what you hoped for? Any surprises? (If you didn't respond or make any predictions, it's OK... you can still play!)

Re: How was 2010 for you?

  • 2010: going on 28 finishing up my teaching program. Maybe having a kid, if we're lucky. Celebrating our aniversary, maybe adding on to the house.

    Real 2010:

    Turn 28 CHECK

Have a kid and adding on to the house- well no on the house thing. We had 3 beautiful children, but they are no longer with us.

honestly 2010 was quite possibly the worst year of my entire life. Wow I'm a debby downer.

  • I love that you found that!

Mine was bang on - saving, no flying, teaching. We do have a vacation planned, but not until next summer.

All in all, it was a good year for us.

  • Awww. I apparently didn't participate in that post. Weird.

I think 2010 was pretty good, at least better than I thought it was going to be. I passed 2 bar exams when I thought I'd fail at least 1. I also finished law school, and if I'm lucky, we'll have a BFP before the year ends.

This year really could have gone into the ditch if things had happened differently. DH was also supposed to be gone for 6 months of it. Thankfully that didn't happen either.

  • 2010: I'll be turning 29 this year. I'm working at my alma mater, in a career that I love, though not exactly in the field I expected. I'm married to the most amazing guy, though not exactly the type of guy I expected to end up with. We own our condo, which is tiny but cozy, and in an amazing location. I'm hoping V will graduate this year and begin his career, and then we might consider buying a larger house (though that may wait till next year). We're also potentially planning a trip to India & Hong Kong in the fall. And one of those friends that I sat down with ten years ago is indeed married with one baby, and several others are married.

Still at the same job, still love it.

V didn't graduate but he almost certainly will this spring. We didn't do the fall overseas trip (which was supposed to be his graduation celebration) but we did have a great trip to the Maritimes in June. We'll do some sort of graduation trip after his internal defense, in February. His final defense won't be until April but I don't want to wait that long to travel. At the time, I definitely didn't expect I'd be pg by the end of the year. This will probably push our new home plans up a bit. Perhaps we'll visit Hong Kong and India next year after the baby arrives.

Oh, and I think at the time I responded to that thread, we didn't even have Sherlock yet! So he was a bit of a surprise too.

  • My prediction was lame.  I'll have to do better for next year.

This year was a good one for me.  I made a lot of changes in the way I view/act upon diet and exercise and it's made a big impact in my life.

I'm really proud of all of the work we've done on the house, and how far we've come in paying down our student loans.  I'm really looking forward to next year!

  • 2010: Married at 31 to an amazing man. This year we're planning our belated honeymoon, finalizing our decision on whether or not to have kids, and looking to get stronger and faster in our workouts. My job's not the best, but I hope to change that this year. Looking to get some serious reading and writing done -- maybe try to publish some short stories? Going to start research for the novel idea that I have. We'll probably travel quite a bit this year: Seattle, Michigan, somewhere in the southwest for a hiking trip, and wherever our honeymoon takes us.

We did our honeymoon to Cancun, which was lots of fun; we didn't travel as much as we wanted to, but we've already got two planned for January, we're going back to Cancun in April, and we've got our eye on Greece for next September. No new job, but not for lack of trying. I actually don't hate my job as much as I did then, it pays well, so it's cool for now. New job for H, though, and he's really happy. No decision on kids yet--we're still going back and forth like crazy, and it's really hard to imagine myself as a mother most of the time. Lots of writing done, but not the kind I'd hoped for. I am faster, definitely stronger, and looking to tackle a 10 mile race in April. Overall a pretty good year.

  •  It's ok MO, you deserve and will have a great 2011, I just know it.

Ringy, great find on this.  I had totally forgotten about this poll.

My prediction for 2010. Will be turning 37 and celebrating my one year anniversay with my DH and expecting our first child.  Hoping to do a few more house renovations.

Actual 2010- Well we not only welcomed our first child, we welcomed our second as well.  House Renovations didn't happen since we had 2 babies. DH is graduating in December, so 2011 will hopefully be a better year for renovations and what not.

  • MO even if this year was for you the worst year ever. It's almost over and things will get better.

For me things are way different. We opted to rent and live in the neighborhood we wanted to originally buy in in the city. It was a fantastic choice since home prices are still plummeting and the homes were were looking at are now 20-30k under what they were. It's been a blast living in the city, near my BIL and walking to my job everyday. Except maybe not so good on my waist line. The food is so good.

For the future I wrote that we'd be going back to Barcelona in 10 years. Well fast forward that trip we decided to go back to Spain for a road trip so I'll be spending a 15 days in Madrid, Valencia and places in between before heading back to Barcelona for a few days.

Work wise life has gotten better. The recession has been very hard on I.D and every job has been a struggle to get and to do a good job to get repeat clients and larger jobs. It seems to be coming around though.

I love that you found this and posted it. It was neat to see what I thought then and now.

  • MO, I'm with Susi, it's good that you can vent and get it all out. I am also wishing you the best for 2011!

I didn't participate because I was in Mexico, but mine would have included graduating with my MBA, new jobs for me and Kyle, and probably getting some more renovations done on our house.

I did graduate in May, right on schedule. I'll be starting my new job in a week. At this point I don't know for sure if it's 100% what I was looking for or not, but I'm feeling very positive about it. If nothing else, it will have to be an improvement. I've heard from my new boss several times and she seems much more organized than my current boss. Kyle has not has any luck with the job search yet. That will definitely continue into 2011. We ended up not getting much done on the house because the beef business ended up consuming much more of our time than we anticipated, but it is growing like crazy and I can't complain about that.

  • MO, totally agree with everybody - please don't feel embarassed.  That's what we're here for.  And next year will definitely be better

2010: At 31, married to my perfect match and living in London.  As we both started new jobs last year, we'll be become more confident and settled in our careers.  We'll be travelling a lot during the year, with possible trips to France, India, Italy, Greece and Turkey (and hopefully some others!).

Overall, 2010 was pretty much right on target.  We're both doing well in our careers, and now starting to think about our next steps.  We did all of the above trips, in addition to NYC, Madrid, Barcelona, and Norway (+ Vienna, Israel and Jordan to come before year end).  We did hope to have more visitors, but a few people bailed on us.  We did not expect to be TTC by now, so that is exciting.  And proves to make for quite a different 2011 than 2010 if all goes to plan.

  • MO, you have nothing to be embarrased about. We are all here for you and to give you support or whatever else we can do from a distance. You have every right to feel the way you do.

2010: I'll be turning 29 in December and expect to TTC sometime towards the end of the year. I'm really hoping we can find a bigger place this year or that the people upstairs will move out and we can move in there.

Well we pushed the TTC up by about 8 months and are expecting our first little one next year. We decided not to move until after the baby comes to see how our budget will change and what we can realistically afford. Overall I'd say it was a good year for me and I'm happy with where I'm at.

  • Mo, I agree with the other ladies. I'm sure 2011 will be a much better year for you!

2010 - Will be 28 in September. Married to an amazing man. Have an ok job but always looking for something better. Hopefully we'll get our first house this year and start TTC.

I did pretty good overall! I started an amazing new job in August, I couldn't be happier with the career path I'm on now. We bought our house in July and have loved every second of the renovations and decorating. The only thing we haven't done is start TTC.

I got a copy of TCOYF last night!! Hopefully we'll start in January, but it depends on where J is at with his workers comp claim and job situation.

  • No need to be embarrassed around us MO, we love you and you're our friend.

2010: 27/28 happily married. Unemployed but DH and I finally left Alaska! Enjoying not being in school for the first time in 10 years. Big plans this year are for me to find a job, sell our condo in AK and buy something in Seattle. No babies for me any time soon.

Check, check and check. We also lost some dear loved ones that I wouldn't have predicted. We traveled a lot more than we anticipated. Finding a job took a lot longer than expected, but overall it wasn't a bad year.

  • 2010: Newly married, just turned 33, still in the Army and back living in Germany.  Married to an amazing man and happier than I ever thought I would be.  Hoping to start our family this year.  Still love to travel and now love to run.

Actual 2010:  I just turned 34, apparently I can't count.  I am actually pretty upset that we haven't started TTC yet.  DH really wants to start but I need to get to a healthier weight before we start and get a few other things lined up with work.  We got quite a bit of traveling in this year and already have 3 snowboard weekends planned in the next couple of months.  I continued to run and completed two HMs this year.  Pretty excited about next year.

MO, things will get better this year, I just know it.

  • Prediction:

2010: 26, married to my best friend, and teaching middle school English.  Living in New Hampshire with my two crazy, yet adorable Springer Spaniels.  Still have never smoked anything...  In better shape than I have ever been in my life, about to finish my masters degree and perfectly content with my life.  Starting to get the baby bug though...

2020: 36, hopefully living back in VT, with 2-3 kids.  I hope to have my doctorate by this point and be teaching at the college level.  DH will have figured out a fabulous job that he loves (we just aren't sure yet about what it is Smile)

Actual: Everything for 2010 was true...finished my master's, started TTC, and DH finally found a fabulous job that he loves.  We are going to put our house on the market hopefully this spring and move back to Vermont.  If I haven't gotten pregnant by this spring (which I hope I will have obviously), I think I will probably apply to the UVM doctoral program for fall of 2011 for education.

  • 2010: 23 Married to the love of my life.  He is applying for grad school and I am finishing my degree.  We will most likely be leaving  our hometown for the first time.

DH is applying for grad school, but we are not leaving this cozy little town.  I was lucky enough to get a job in my profession and I really like what I do.  We were surprised by getting a little puppy this year, but it was great choice.

  • 2010: 31 years old.  Happily married to a friend who put up with the 2000 model Beth.  Working full time as a pharmacist and now life is starting to shape up into some semblance of how I imagined it.  Hopefully TTC in the summer.

We pushed back TTC due to my job change.  I would love some stability with my job before TTC but that might not happen and we might just go ahead and start while I'm in a temporary position.
