Speaking of work gifts...

I need some advice for my secretary!! My previous secretary was Jehovah's Witness and didn't celebrate holidays, so I've never had to get a secretary gift before. My new one is amazing and I want to do something nice, but not spend more than $25/$30 (we get paid crap here so that's pretty standard).

I'm thinking of getting her liquor because I know her and her bf love to share a nice bottle of whisky, but is that totally inappropriate as an office gift?? If you think it's not appropriate, other ideas?

Re: Speaking of work gifts...

  • We've gotten my boss wine before but we know he really likes wine. I've never had an assistant, however I always remember my mom getting my dad's assistant a nice scarf or something like that. So maybe thats an option?
  • we were going to get a bottle of wine for one our supervisors and were strongly encouraged to nix the idea by upper management -- i'm not really sure on this one because i didn't really see the big deal. :)
  • I don't think it's inappropriate - especially since you know it's something she'll use and enjoy!!!  I've bought wine and liquor gifts for bosses before, because I know it's what they would like (and bosses are hard to shop for).

Same here. I get my boss a bottle of wine or scotch every year, and I've been getting our other auditor a bottle of wine as well. They're both men and I dont' find it inappropriate at all. In fact I drew one of the HR girls for secret Santa this year and she put wine on her list so I bought her a bottle too, with a really cool glass and some wine charms/stopper.

  • I would not see it as inappropriate, especially since it is something that she likes.  Maybe add in some highball glasses, or cheese or something (I dont know what goes with it) to make it more of a gift type thing.
  • I don't see it as inappropriate, but if other people in your office would, I would go for something different, or meet her an her bf for a drink and give it to them outside of work.  I like getting people tickets to live shows or concerts, if she and her bf are into that sort of thing (always a fun date night!)

This! While I don't think it is inappropriate I have numerous bottles of Tequila at home because my boss thinks I drink it like I drink margaritas!  Um no...I do not take a shot every night when I get home!  She may be different though.

What else does she enjoy?  Does she read?  Is there such a thing as a gift card for nooks/kiindles, etc?

    GL!
