Christmas Q

Is it ever considered offensive to write "xmas" instead of Christmas?

Often times, I find myself wanting to abbreviate the word so badly, but sometimes I wonder if it will offend someone. Not you guys particularly, but people in general.

I'm talking about using it in a casual way, like if I was writing a post on here and wrote "...and then I went to my friend's house, and she was decorating her xmas tree..."

I'm not talking about sending Christmas cards and writing "Merry Xmas!" in them. Obviously I would not do that!

I know this is a silly question but I've always wondered this! Embarrassed

Re: Christmas Q

  • I'm not offended by people writing or saying X-Mas, but I'm sure there are many who are citing that X-Mas defeats the the whole Christ-mas thing.

    But then again, I play along because it is a fun, jovial time.

  • It's often offensive to some people who don't know the origin of its use. They assume the "x" means "blank" or "delete" or something, I'm not sure.

    I don't often use wikipedia to explain, but here it is.

  • I think it should only be used if the short hand is necessary. You wouldn't type u or r if you could avoid it right? I'd save x-mas for text messages. (but i'm overly cautious about offending people Stick out tongue)

    Also along the lines of what moon said, it kind of defeats the whole Christ part or it being Christmas.

  • Ha.  Is it bad that it never would have occurred to me that writing X-Mas possibly could be offensive to someone?

    I seldom abbreviate words so it wouldn't be an issue for me, but seriously when I read your post I was like "Huh?  Why would that be offensive?"

    Sometimes I wonder how many people I have offended over the years and never realized........

  • I don't really find it offensive, but I remember when I was younger I said it, or wrote it infront of my Mom and she told me that I shouldn't say/write that because....{insert whatever reason she told me}

  • I went to Catholic school until 6th grade and it was like the 11th commandment to not write X-mas .  See, just typing it here and I'm looking up for lightning...
