Christmas wild goose chase

So my grandmom keeps falling asleep at the kitchen table in the middle of the night.

When this happens she slumps over and falls out of the chair. In the past year, this has happened three times. My grandfather isn't strong enough to lift her on his own.

1. She smashed her nose and face against the table and looked like a prize fighter for weeks.

2. She had to call 911 to come and get her at 2 am.

3. She had to call my uncle and cousins to come and get her at 10pm

Our temporary solution at this point in time is to get her a new kitchen table set that includes chairs with arms. (it's better than putting a seat belt on all of her current chairs).

It would have to be a small round or oval table (four seater) with the chairs with arms.

I don't think they make these anymore. Only chairs with arms are the stupid head chairs for a formal dining room.

This is going to be extremely frustrating this holiday season.

I may go start looking at some used furniture, but I feel terrible doing that for Christmas.

Re: Christmas wild goose chase

  • Ai yi yi. Bad situation, both that she falls out of the chair and that you are not easily finding the furniture. Good luck, and if I see anything in my ventures online I will let you know.

I feel like this Christmas has been especially stressful, both for shopping and trying to figure out what to tell people to get me.

  • Oh yea...I haven't seen those type of chairs in years!  Good luck!

Why doesn't she sit on the sofa..that's a safe place to fall asleep.  Does she read or something at the table??  What about getting her one of those coffee tables that lift up and inward?  Have you seen those?  Then she can sit on the sofa, lift up the table to eat, read, drink coffee/tea.  If she falls asleep and leans either to the right or left a soft cushion will be there!  :)

  • Ugh...that really stinks, Marcy...

I do like Ashley's idea though...although I know it can be difficult to convince older people to change their ways.

  • She sleeps in a recliner chair, but I guess in the middle of the night she gets restless and will go into the kitchen to eat a bowl of frosted flakes or watch some TV.

She's so exhausted from crappy sleep that she'll fall asleep sitting up.

    The entire situation sucks.

  • Ugh - that DOES suck. Good luck finding a table and with the whole situation!

  • I know it's not ideal, but a lot of patio furniture dinette sets have arm chairs.

We're having issues with my grandma falling a lot lately, I understand what you're going through :(

Good luck with the search, I hope you can find something that will help remedy the situation soon!

  • You could check out Warehouse of Dinettes in St. Charles, MO. They're an authorized dealer of Chromocraft, which is the type of dinette set I think you're looking for. They can ship anywhere across the country.

DH and I went there once when we still live in MO, and I was amazed that the A) were open for business and B) actually sold stuff that was more popular in the 90's. DH is convinced their a front business for something. Who knows.
