Are your rooms themed?

Mine are and I am tired of it, however I don't know how to decorate without themes! lol

Mainly the powder room (palm trees) and the kitchen (beachy) are the issue. I was thinking of moving all the kitchen decor into the master bedroom as I just painted it "Jamaica Bay" blue/green (it actually looks more like Tiffany blue to me).

If I do that, then my bedroom is themed and I won't know what to put in the kitchen (yellow with red/maroon).

Help, I am so decorating challenged!

Thanks! =)

Re: Are your rooms themed?

  • I am anti-theme (except for our future Capitals basement/cave) so I usually just do accessories in coordinating colors and stick with more neutral accents.

Our living room has an apple green accent wall and all else is beige. Our furniture is a deep beige and dark brown (coffee table, etc). Things that are out for decoration are white/brown/light yellow/black. Accents range from a small floral arrangement to a kate spade vase to a cute brown owl on our bookcase to a wrought iron basket to milk glass. I like an ecclectic mix (lots of vintage stuff thanks to Grandma! haha) that all coordinates.

  • We don't have any themes in our house.  Instead of a theme think color and texture. So if you want beach feel to your room without actually having a bedspread with sandals on it try thinking about things like sea glass, natural woods like teak or bamboo or classic white furniture, sheer drapes, etc.

  • I have some themed rooms but most of them are just really based on colors.  I have a beach themed room.  I have a room that has landscape pictures too.  The rest of my rooms are really just colored similar as a theme.
  • We are decorating challenged as well so started with paint colors we liked that flowed well together from room to room. We had a Sherwin Williams color consultant person come over (for free!) and help us choose colors for everything. The only thing they asked in return is that when we did buy paint we went to that store- which we would've anyway.

So now I guess we have a "pallette"- Any pop of other coordinating colors we'll add through accessories (if we ever get that far- still painting!)

  • Not really.  Our entire house is basically, tans, golds, reds, etc., so it all kind of matches in a way.

Our main bathroom is brown, tan and a lighter tan with stripes and circles.  SD picked it out a long time ago and its nice.  That is the only room where things are sort of matchy.

  • Not a fan of themed rooms unless they are for kids or a game room. We just have coordinating colors throughout the house. Warm tones beiges, browns, greens, some reds and touches of black and charcoal for contrast. I agree with PP think textures and colors... look through some magazines and find what you like and just try and make it work in your space.
  • No themes (except Evan's room which is kind of an outdoorsy theme).  I mainly pick a color and then find things that accent it.  I have a feeling after this next baby I am going to want to re-do some things.

  • We don't have themes, I try to find artwork or stuff that goes with our paint colors.

  • not theme really except my kitchen is coffee mugs and pictures of coffee (latte, cappuccino, etc)- I try to do the color thing too but interior design is just not my bag...I get all wrapped up in wanting my house to look like pottery barn and then wanting it to look more lived in...
